And among us is one in whose presence people do not speak,
Among us is he who people do not speak in his presence,
but whose leave is sought and who is waited upon.
Yet he is the most courteous and just.

You see them seated around him, their eyes
You see them sitting around him with their eyes
downcast, their gazes never wandering.
Downcast, their gazes unmoving.

And two houses: God's House, whose guardians we are,
The House of Allah is ours and our idols,
and a lofty house on the heights of Iliya.
And there is a house on top of Mount Elijah.

Ours, where the horizons of humankind meet,
For us wherever the horizons of the earth meet
are numbers matching the pebbles, and Khindif's mighty host.
Is the countless pebbles and the palace of the archer.

When people descend from Mina
on the evening of Sacrifice Day, from where they stood at Arafat,
On the evening of the day of sacrifice from where they were acquainted,

you see the people marching behind us whenever we march,
You see people walking behind us
and if we signal to the people, they halt.
And if we gesture to the people, they stop.

Thousands upon thousands of coats of mail and spears,
Thousands of coats of mail and spears
and horses like the first swarms of locusts, and infantry.
And horses like locusts swarming.

And if they ever break their pledge, we strike their necks
And if they betray us one day, we strike their necks
for the faith, until the one being won over comes forward.
For the religion until the compliant returns.
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you إِذwhen تَسعىyou strive لِتُدرِكَto catch up with دارِماًDarim
لَأَنتَyou indeed المُعَنّىthe hard-pressed ياO جَريرُJarir المُكَلَّفُthe overburdened
For when you strive to catch up with Darim,
For you, as you strive to reach our abode
you are indeed hard-pressed, O Jarir, overburdened.
You are truly the one concerned, O Jarir.

Do you seek what lies near the stars and above them
Do you seek from the stars and above them
with tethers and a donkey whose back is peeling?
With lightning and a caravan whose back is humped?

A vile, abject clan has denied Jarir this,
Jarir refused the company of wicked, disgraced men
and a base reputation given over to disgrace.
And a despicable reputation reserved for the shameless.

When Darim sits with knees drawn up for me at the goal,
When Darim calls me to the utmost limit,
you race toward it, running with a swagger.
You race towards it like one stumbling blindly.

Each of us has a clan that rallies to his aid,
Both of us have a people who are loyal to us
with their ancestral honors, until one sees who is left behind,
By their accounts until the laggard sees.

toward a finish, until it sets them apart,
For a period until he abandons between them
and the goad pains whichever of us is baseborn.
And the sting grieves the one who is heaping.

I turned war against you; I, when weariness overtakes
I have turned war towards you, I when I become intimate
a warrior, charge my foe again and wheel back.
Am a fellow warrior, the spear on the nape a cloak.

You bewail Sa'd, while Sa'd remains settled
You cry over Saad while Saad is an abode
at Yabrin; among them are those who increase and double.
In Yabreen, among them the one who adds and weakens.
