Among us is he who was chosen above other men for generosity,

and goodness, when the tempestuous winds blow.

And among us is he to whom the Messenger gave, as a gift,

Tamim's captives, while eyes streamed with tears.

And among us is he who gives hundreds and buys the

precious things, and his excellence surpasses whoever contends with him.

And among us is an orator beyond reproach, and a burden-bearer,

illustrious when the assemblies gather around him.

And among us is he who saved the infant from live burial, and Ghalib,

and Amr; among us are Hajib and the Aqariʿ.

And among us, on the morning of terror, are young raiders,

when knuckles rise beneath the spear-butts.

And among us is he who led the steeds despite their sore hooves,

to Najran, until the far-brought steeds struck it at dawn.

Those are my forefathers; bring me their equals,

when the assemblies bring us together, O Jarir.

They begot me, so I rose to the summit above you—

men like seas; among us are burden-bearers and a defender.

Through them I rise to all that Mujashiʿ has charged me with,

and throw down my peers, those with whom I wrestle.

How I marvel—even Kulayb reviles me,

as though her father were Nahshal or Mujashiʿ.

Do you boast that Kulayb has claimed kinship with Nahshal,

though Nahshal and the Rabaʾiʿ are not of Kulayb?

But they are my two paternal uncles, of the house of Malik.

So squat down, for the paths of ascent are barred to you.

For you, unless you seek refuge in Nahshal,

are surely powerless, O son of al-Maraghah, and lost.
