لَقَد ضَرَبَ الحَجّاجُ ضَربَةَ حازِمٍ

لَقَد ضَرَبَ الحَجّاجُ ضَربَةَ حازِمٍ

كَبا جُندُ إِبليسٍ لَها وَتَضَعضَعوا

كَبا جُندُ إِبليسٍ لَها وَتَضَعضَعوا

Al-Hajjaj has indeed struck a resolute man's blow;

Al-Hajjaj struck a decisive blow

Iblis's troops stumbled at it and were shaken.

That routed Iblis's army and made them tremble

أَضاءَ لَها ما بَينَ شَرقٍ وَمَغرِبٍ

أَضاءَ لَها ما بَينَ شَرقٍ وَمَغرِبٍ

بِنورٍ مُضيءٍ وَالأَسِنَّةُ شُرَّعُ

بِنورٍ مُضيءٍ وَالأَسِنَّةُ شُرَّعُ

At that blow, all between east and west shone

It lit up the land between East and West

With radiant light, while the spearheads were leveled.

With shining light, swords unsheathed

وَخَرَّت شَياطينُ البِلادِ كَأَنَّها

وَخَرَّت شَياطينُ البِلادِ كَأَنَّها

مَخافَةَ أُخرى في الأَزِمَّةِ خُضَّعُ

مَخافَةَ أُخرى في الأَزِمَّةِ خُضَّعُ

And the devils of the land fell, as though they were

The devils of the lands fell down

Bowed beneath the reins for fear of another blow.

As if compelled to bow again in crisis

فَلَم يَدَعِ الحَجّاجُ مِن ذي عَداوَةٍ

فَلَم يَدَعِ الحَجّاجُ مِن ذي عَداوَةٍ

مِنَ الناسِ إِلّا يَستَكينُ وَيَضرَعُ

مِنَ الناسِ إِلّا يَستَكينُ وَيَضرَعُ

So al-Hajjaj left no enemy

Al-Hajjaj left no hostile man

Among the people but submissive and humbled.

Without him pleading and begging for mercy

إِذا حارَبَ الحَجّاجُ أَيَّ مُنافِقٍ

إِذا حارَبَ الحَجّاجُ أَيَّ مُنافِقٍ

عَلاهُ بِسَيفٍ كُلَّما هُزَّ يَقطَعُ

عَلاهُ بِسَيفٍ كُلَّما هُزَّ يَقطَعُ

Whenever al-Hajjaj fights any hypocrite,

Whenever Al-Hajjaj fought any hypocrite

He strikes him with a sword that cuts whenever it is brandished.

He would vanquish him with a sword that severs with every shake
