إِذاwhen سُقناwe drove in الفَرائِضَthe prescribed livestock dues لَمdid not يُرِدهاwant them
وَصَدَّand he turned away عَنِfrom الشُوَيهَةِthe little ewe وَالبَعيرِand the camel
When we drove in the prescribed livestock dues, he did not want them,
And turned away from the little ewe and the camel.
إِذاwhen وَضَعَhe set out السِياطَthe whips لَناfor us نَهاراًby day
أَخَذناwe borrowed بِالرِباat interest سَرَقَlengths of cloth الحَريرِof silk
When he set out the whips for us by day,
We borrowed lengths of silk at interest.
فَأَدخَلَناso it brought us into جَهَنَّمَHell ماwhat أَخَذناwe took
مِنَof الإِرباءِusury مِنin دونِdefense of الظُهورِthe backs
So into Hell we were led by what we took
Through usury, to spare our backs.
فَلَوso if سَمِعَheard الخَليفَةُthe caliph صَوتَthe voice of داعٍa caller
يُناديcalling out اللَهِGod هَلis there ليfor me مِنany مُجيرِgiver of refuge
Were the caliph to hear a caller's voice,
Calling to God, 'Is there anyone to grant me refuge?'
وَأَصواتَand the voices النِساءِof the women مُقَرَّناتٍbound together
وَصِبيانٍand children لَهُنَّof theirs عَلىupon الحُجورِthe laps
And the voices of women bound together,
And of their children upon their laps,
إِذاًthen لَأَجابَهُنَّwould surely answer them لِسانُthe tongue of داعٍa herald
لِدينِfor the faith of اللَهِGod مِغضابٍfierce in anger نَصورِstaunch in aid
Then a herald's tongue would surely answer them—
For God's faith, fierce in anger and staunch in aid—
أَمينِthe trusted one of اللَهِGod يَصدَعُhe proclaims openly حينَwhen يَقضيhe judges
بِدينِby the faith of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad وَبِهِand through it أُمورِaffairs
God's trusted one, who speaks out when he judges
By Muhammad's faith—and through it affairs are settled.
