أَناI اِبنُson of خِندِفَKhindif وَالحاميand the defender حَقيقَتَهاher honor
قَدindeed جَعَلواthey have placed فيin يَدَيَّmy two hands الشَمسَthe sun وَالقَمَراand the moon
I am Khindif's son and the defender of her honor.
They have placed the sun and moon in my two hands.
وَلَوand even if نَفَرتَyou marched forth بِقَيسٍwith Qays لَاِحتَقَرتُهُمُI would surely scorn them
إِلىagainst تَميمٍTamim تَقودُyou lead الخَيلَthe horses وَالعَكَراand the great camel herds
Even if you marched forth with Qays, I would scorn them,
while you led horses and great camel herds against Tamim,
وَفيهِمِand among them مائَتاtwo hundred أَلفٍthousand فَوارِسُهُمtheir horsemen
وَحَرشَفٌand foot soldiers كَجُشاءِlike the dense darkness of اللَيلِthe night إِذwhen زَخَراit surged
and among them were two hundred thousand horsemen,
and foot soldiers like night's dense darkness when it surged,
كانواthey would be إِذاًthen لِتَميمٍfor Tamim لُقمَةًa mouthful ذَهَبَتthat passed
فيinto ذيone possessing بَلاعيمَgullets لَهّامٍvoracious إِذاwhen فَغَراhe gaped
they would then be a mouthful for Tamim, passing
into a ravenous devourer's gullets when he gaped.
باتَspent the night تَميمٌTamim وَهُمwhile they فيin بَعضِsome أَوعِيَةٍcompartments
مِنof بَطنِهِhis belly قَدalready تَعَشّاهُمhe ate them for supper وَماand not شَعَراhe noticed
Tamim spent the night with them in some compartments
of his belly; he had eaten them for supper without noticing.
ياO أَيُّهاyou النابِحُthe barker العاويthe howler لِشِقوَتِهِto his own misery
إِلَيَّto me أُخبِركَI shall inform you عَمّاabout what تَجهَلُyou do not know الخَبَراthe news
O you who bark and howl to your own misery,
come to me; I shall give you news of what you do not know:
بِأَنَّthat حَيّاتِthe snakes of قَيسٍQays إِنif دَلَفتَyou advance بِهاwith them
حَيّاتُsnakes of ماءٍwater سَتَلقىyou will meet الحَيَّةَthe serpent الذَكَراthe male
that Qays's snakes, if you advance with them,
are water snakes; you will meet the male serpent,
أَصَمَّdeaf لاdo not تَقرَبُapproach الحَيّاتُthe snakes هَضبَتَهُhis rocky height
وَلَيسَand no حَيٌّliving creature لَهُtoward him عاشٍapproaching يَرىsees أَثَراa trace
deaf, whose rocky height no snakes approach;
and no living creature approaching him sees a trace.
ياO قَيسَQays عَيلانَAylan إِنّيindeed I كُنتُI had قُلتُI said لَكُمto you
ياO قَيسَQays عَيلانَAylan أَنthat لاnot تُسرِعواyou rush into الضَجَراimpatience
O Qays Aylan, I had indeed told you,
O Qays Aylan, not to be quick to lose patience.
إِنّيindeed I مَتىwhenever أَهجُI satirize قَوماًa people لاnot أَدَعI leave لَهُمُfor them
سَمعاًhearing إِذاwhen اِستَمَعواthey listen to صَوتيmy voice وَلاnor بَصَراsight
Indeed, whenever I satirize a people, I leave them neither
hearing, when they listen to my voice, nor sight.
ياO غَطَفانُGhatafan دَعيleave مَرعىthe pasture of مُهَنَّأَةٍa tar-treated she-camel
تُعديshe infects الصِحاحَthe healthy ones إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle عَرُّهاher mange اِنتَشَراspreads
O Ghatafan, leave the pasture of a tar-treated she-camel,
who infects healthy camels when her mange spreads.
لاdoes not يُبرِئُcure القَطِرانُthe tar المَحضُpure ناشِرَهاher spreading mange
إِذاwhen تَصَعَّدَit climbs upward فيin الأَعناقِthe necks وَاِستَعَراand flares up
Pure tar cannot cure her spreading mange
when it climbs up the necks and flares up.
لَوif لَمhad not تَكُنbeen غَطَفانٌGhatafan لاno ذُنوبَoffenses لَهاattributed to her
إِلَيَّagainst me لامَwould have blamed ذَوُوmen possessing أَحلامِهِمtheir sound judgment عُمَراUmar
Had Ghatafan not been free of offenses
against me, their men of sound judgment would have blamed Umar
مَمّاbecause of how تَشَجَّعَhe grew bold مِنّيagainst me حينَwhen هَجهَجَhe shouted بيat me
مِنfrom بَينِbetween مَغرِبِهاits setting-place وَالقَرنِand the horn إِذwhen فَطَراit broke forth
for his boldness against me when he shouted at me,
from between the sun's setting-place and its horn as it broke forth.
