He has sustained you with the Mighty One's might and strength,
and given men their portion in their left hands.
فَأَصبَحتَso you are now قَدalready أَبرَأتَyou cured ماwhat فيin قُلوبِهِمtheir hearts

So you have now rid their hearts
of deceit, among the various groups of those tribes.
فَماfor ... not الناسُpeople إِلّاexcept فيon سَبيلَينِtwo paths مِنهُماof the two
سَبيلٌa path لِحَقٍّtoward truth أَوor سَبيلٌa path لِباطِلِtoward falsehood
For people follow only two paths, namely:
a path of truth or a path of falsehood.
فَجَرَّدso he unsheathed لَهُمagainst them سَيفَthe sword of الجِهادِholy warfare فَإِنَّماfor only

So he unsheathed the sword of holy warfare against them; for only
by entrusting matters to the Lord of bounties were you granted victory.

And nothing is worse than a traitor's evil deed,
which he brings on the day when accumulated deeds are tested.

It is his disgrace in this world; and his dwelling,
because of it, when he meets God, is the worst of dens.

I think the tribe's daughters will withhold every gift,
every affection and bounty from them.

Then he gave them what lay in the clothes-bags in exchange, when they came
to you women; and the women traded the camel-litter bindings

for ostriches' swords—except that their beards
on the chins of their jaws resemble tangled tufts.

Perhaps the women will fend people off from you when there meet
the detachments of a mighty host and a force taking the field for battle.

And men are only those who trade spear-thrusts in battle
and strike the head of the challenger prepared to die.

May my mother be your ransom: put a mark upon them,
and forbid them virtuous wives.

We distinguish between the believers and them
when they enter the markets amid the gatherings.

For no people are worse than they, except that
you would take them for the likes of Turks and men of Kabul.

You see the eyes of the perishing turned toward him, as though they were
the eyes of a wild-cattle herd circling at the watering places.

They watch a lavish giver, as though his serving-bowls were
the vast, ancient, brimming cisterns of Zarud.
