فَلَمso did not يَجلُunveil عَنfrom أَحسابِهِhis ancestral honors غَيرُother than غالِبٍGhalib
جَرىraced بِعِنانَيwith both reins of كُلِّevery أَبلَجَbright-faced خِضرِمِbountiful
So none but Ghalib brought his ancestral honors to light,
Racing with both reins of every bright-faced, bountiful man.
وَلَوand had قَبِلَتaccepted سَيدانُSaydan مِنّيfrom me حَليفَتيmy oath
شَفَيتُI would have satisfied بِهاwith it ماwhat يَدَّعيclaims آلُthe clan of ضَمضَمِDamdam
And had Saydan accepted my oath from me,
With it I would have satisfied the claims of Damdam's clan.
I would surely have given ماwhat أَرضىsatisfied هُبَيرَةَHubayra قائِماًstanding
مِنَof المُعلَنِthe openly declared الباديthe evident لَناto us وَالمُجَمجَمِand the obscurely expressed
I would surely have given, standing, what would satisfy Hubayra,
Of what was openly declared, plain to us, and what was veiled.
وَكُنتُand I was كَمَسؤولٍlike one held accountable بِأَحداثِfor the misdeeds of قَومِهِhis people
لِيُصلِحَهاto put them right مَنone who لَيسَis not فيهاin them بِمُجرِمِguilty (emphatic)
And I was like one held to account for his people's misdeeds,
So that one guiltless of them might put them right.
وَلَكِنand yet إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle المُصلِحونَthe peacemakers عَصاهُمُhe defied them
وَلِيٌّan ally فَماthen there is no لِلنُصحِfor counsel مِنany (emphatic) مُتَقَدَّمِway forward
But when the peacemakers are defied
By an ally, counsel has no way forward.
