إِلىto مَلِكٍa king ماnot أُمُّهُhis mother مِنof مُحارِبٍMuharib
أَبوهاher father وَلاnor كانَتwas كُلَيبٌKulayb تُصاهِرُهintermarries with him
To a king whose mother is not of Muharib
through her father, nor did Kulayb ever intermarry with him.
وَلَكِنbut أَبوهاher father مِنof رَواحَةَRawaha تَرتَقيrises
بِأَيّامِهِthrough his battle-days قَيسٌQays عَلىabove مَنthose whom تُفاخِرُهit vies with him in glory
But her father is of Rawaha; higher rises
Qays, through his battle-days, above those it vies with in glory.
زُهَيرٌZuhayr وَمَروانُand Marwan الحِجازِthe Hijaz كِلاهُماboth of them
أَبوهاher father لَهاhers أَيّامُهُhis battle-days وَمَآثِرُهand his glorious deeds
Zuhayr and Marwan of the Hijaz—each
is her forefather; his battle-days and glorious deeds are hers.
بِهِمthrough them تَخفِضُlowers الأَذيالَthe hems بَعدَafter اِرتِفاعِهاtheir being raised
مِنَfrom الفَزَعِthe terror الساعِthe spreading نَهاراًby day حَرائِرُهhis freeborn women
Through them, hems are lowered after being raised
in terror sweeping by day, by his freeborn women.
وَقَدand indeed خُفتُI feared حَتّىto the point that لَوif أَرىI see المَوتَdeath مُقبِلاًapproaching
لِيَأخُذَنيto take me وَالمَوتُand death يُكرَهُis hated زائِرُهits visitor
And I have feared so much that, were I to see Death approaching
to take me—though Death's visitor is hated—
لَكانَit would be مِنَthan الحَجّاجِal-Hajjaj أَهوَنَless severe رَوعَةًin terror
إِذاwhen هُوَhe أَغضىlowered his eyelids وَهوَwhile he سامٍraising نَواظِرُهhis eyes
it would be less terrifying than al-Hajjaj,
when he lowers his eyelids yet raises his gaze.
أَدِبُّI creep وَدونيand before me سَيرُa journey of شَهرٍa month كَأَنَّنيas though I
أَراكَI see you وَلَيلٌand a night مُستَحيرٌmassed عَساكِرُهits armies
I creep, a month's journey between us, as though
I see you, while night's armies stand massed.
ذَكَرتُI recalled الَّذيwhat بَينيbetween me وَبَينَكَand between you بَعدَماafter
رَمىhurled بِيَme مِنfrom نَجدَيthe two uplands of تِهامَةَTihama غائِرُهits lowland
I recalled what lies between me and you, after
its lowland had hurled me from Tihama's two uplands.
فَأَيقَنتُso I became certain أَنّيthat I إِنif رَأَيتُكَI saw you لَمdid not يَرِدlead
I dread it
So I knew for certain that, if I saw you, distance had led
me only to everything I dread,
وَأَنand that لَوif رَكِبتَyou rode الريحِthe wind ثُمَّthen طَلَبتَنيyou pursued me
لَكُنتُI would be كَشَيءٍlike a thing أَدرَكَتهُovertook it مَقادِرُهits decreed fates
and that, if you rode the wind and then pursued me,
I would be like a thing overtaken by its allotted fate.
فَلَمso I did not أَرَsee شَيئاًanything غَيرَother than إِقبالِthe approach of ناقَتيmy she-camel
إِلَيكَtoward you وَأَمريand my predicament قَدalready تَعَيَّتbecame intractable مَصادِرُهits ways out
So I saw no course but my she-camel's advance
toward you, all ways out of my plight having failed.
وَماand not خافَfeared شَيءٌany creature لَمdid not يَمُتdie مِنfrom مَخافَةٍfear
كَماas قَدindeed أَسَرَّتconcealed فيin فُؤاديmy heart ضَمائِرُهhis secret thoughts
And no creature that has not died of fright has known fear
like that which his secret thoughts have hidden in my heart.
أَخافُI fear مِنَfrom الحَجّاجِal-Hajjaj سَورَةَthe furious charge of مُخدِرٍa lion in its lair
ضَوارِبَstriking بِالأَعناقِat the necks مِنهُfrom him خَوادِرُهhis lurking lions
I fear in al-Hajjaj the onslaught of a lion in its lair,
whose lurking lions strike at necks.
