أوصيI counsel تَميماًTamim إِنif قُضاعَةَQudaʿa ساقَهاdrove them
قَواlack الغَيثِthe rain مِنfrom دارٍa dwelling بُدومَةَat Duma أَوor جَدبِdrought
I counsel Tamim: if Qudaʿa is driven
from a home at Duma by lack of rain or drought,
إِذاif اِنتَجَعَتsought pasture كَلبٌKalb عَليكُمto you فَمَكِّنواthen provide
لَهاfor them الدارَthe dwelling مِنof سَهلِeasy المُباءَةِthe camping ground وَالشَربِand drinking water
if Kalb comes to you seeking pasture, provide
a home for them, with easy camping ground and water to drink.
فَإِنَّهُمُfor indeed they الأَحلافُthe allies وَالغَيثُand the rain مَرَّةًsometimes
يَكونُis بِشَرقٍin the east مِنof بِلادٍlands وَمِنand from غَربِthe west
For they are allies, and rain sometimes
falls in the east of a land, and sometimes in the west.
أَشَدُّstrongest حِبالٍcords بَينَbetween حَيَّينِtwo tribes مِرَّةًtightness of twist
حِبالٌcords أُمِرَّتtightly twisted مِنfrom تَميمٍTamim وَمِنand from كَلبِKalb
The most firmly twisted cords between two tribes
are cords tightly twisted by Tamim and by Kalb.
وَلَيسَand is not قُضاعِيٌّa man of Qudaʿa لَدَيناamong us بِخائِفٍafraid
وَإِنand even if أَصبَحَتhave become تَغليboiling القُدورُthe cauldrons مِنَfrom الحَربِwar
And no man of Qudaʿa among us is afraid,
even if the cauldrons begin to boil with war.
فَإِنَّfor indeed تَميماًTamim لاnot يُجيرُgrants protection عَلَيهِمُagainst them
عَزيزٌa mighty man وَلاnor صِنديدُa champion مَملَكَةٍa realm غُلبِmighty men
For no one can grant protection against Tamim—
neither a mighty man nor a champion of a realm of mighty men.
هُمُthey المُتَخَلّىthose left unchallenged أَنthat يُجارَprotection be granted عَلَيهُمُagainst them
إِذاwhen اِستَعَرَتflared up عَدوىthe contagion المُعَبَّدَةِthe tar-smeared camels الجُربِthe mangy ones
They are those against whom all thought of granting protection is abandoned,
when the contagion of tar-smeared, mangy camels flares.
وَأَجسَمُand larger-bodied مِنthan عادٍʿAd جُسومُthe bodies رِجالُهُمtheir men
وَأَكثَرُand more numerous إِنif عُدّواthey are counted عَديدَin number مِنَthan التُربِthe dust
And their men's bodies are larger than those of ʿAd,
and, if counted, they outnumber the grains of dust.

Stalwart warriors amid terror, on every battlefield,
when the coward's soul leaps up in dread.
