أَلاwhy not? تَفتَريyou fabricate إِذsince لَمdid not تَجِدyou find لَكَfor yourself مَفخَراًa source of pride
أَلاindeed رُبَّماsometimes يَجريruns مَعَwith الحَقِّthe truth باطِلُهits falsehood
Why not fabricate, since you have found no source of pride of your own?
Indeed, sometimes falsehood runs alongside truth.
فَتَحمَدَso you praise ماwhat فيهِمis in them وَلَوand even if كُنتَyou were كاذِباًlying
فَيَسمَعَهُso he hears it ياO اِبنَson of المَراغَةِal-Marāgha جاهِلُهone ignorant of it
So you may praise what is in them, even if you are lying,
and someone ignorant of it may hear it, O son of al-Marāgha.
وَلَكِنand yet تَدَعّىyou claim kinship with مَنthose سِواهُمother than them إِذاwhen رَمىhe shoots
إِلىtoward الغَرَضِthe target الأَقصىthe farthest البَعيدِthe distant مُناضِلُهtheir rival archer
But you claim kinship with others besides them, when a shot is loosed
toward the farthest, distant target by their rival archer.
فَتَعلَمُso you know أَنthat لَوif كُنتَyou were خَيراًbetter عَلَيهِمُabove them
كَذَبتَyou lied وَأَخزاكَand disgraced you الَّذيwhat أَنتَyou قائِلُهsaying it
Then you will know that, if you claim to be better than them,
you have lied, and what you say has disgraced you.
تَعاطَreach for مَكانَthe station of النَجمِthe star إِنif كُنتَyou were طالِباًseeking
بَنيthe sons of دارِمٍDārim فَاِنظُرthen see مَتىwhen أَنتَyou طالِبُهseeking it
Reach for the star's station if you are seeking
the sons of Dārim; see when you can seek it.
فَلَلنَجمِfor indeed the star أَدنىnearer مِنهُمُthan them أَنto تَنالَهُyou reach it
عَلَيكَattend to your charge فَأَصلِحso repair زَربَthe pen of ماwhat أَنتَyou آبِلُهits camel-herder
For the star is nearer to your reach than they are.
Attend to your charge: mend the pen of the camels you herd.
أَلَمdid ... not? يَكُbe مِمّاamong what يُرعِدُmakes tremble الناسَthe people أَنthat تَرىyou see
كُلَيباًKulayb تَغَنّىsang بِاِبنِabout the son of لَيلىLaylā تُناضِلُهcontending with him
Was it not something to make people tremble, to see
Kulayb singing about Ibn Laylā, contending with him?
أَبيmy father مالِكٌMālik ماnot مِنany أَبٍfather تَعرِفونَهُyou know him

My father, Mālik—no father you know
of yours, beneath the earth's roots, equals him.
عَجِبتُI marveled إِلىat خَلقِthe build of الكُلَيبِيِّthe Kulaybite عُلِّقَتwere suspended

I marveled at the Kulaybite's build: suspended were
his hands, though his fingertips had not grown strong in gripping.
فَدونَكَso take for yourself هَذيthis فَاِنتَقِضهاthen unravel it فَإِنَّهاfor indeed it
شَديدُstrong قِوىstrands أَمراسِهاof its ropes وَمَواصِلُهand its joins
So take this and unravel it, for it
has strong rope-strands and firm joins.
