O Salm, how many a coward you have kept steadfast

Beneath the swords; but for you, he would not have stood firm.

You kept striking, while the champions scowled,

In battle, the head of the people's ram as he wheeled back to attack.

Nor has a valiant horseman ever neglected Tamim,

From Mazin: whoever he aids robes himself in victory.

An ardent seeker of vengeance, outstripping his enemy in it,

No retaliation is exacted from him for blood-debts when he leaves others bereaved.

Radiant—darkness parts to reveal a moon,

A full moon that, when it appears, wholly outshines the moon.

A bearer of banners fluttering with victory,

He summons the two beloveds, so different: death and triumph.

I hope for bounties from him; indeed, his palm

Is like the Euphrates when its waves surge.

Were you not a human we know, O Salm,

You would be a rainstorm from clouds pouring down rain.
