سَتَبلُغُwill reach مِدحَةٌa praise-poem غَرّاءُradiant عَنّيfrom me
سَتَبلُغُ مِدحَةٌ غَرّاءُ عَنّي
بِبَطنِin the heart of العِرضِal-Ird سُفيانَSufyan بنَson of عَمروِAmr
بِبَطنِ العِرضِ سُفيانَ بنَ عَمروِ
A radiant praise-poem from me will reach
A virtuous eulogy from me will reach
Sufyan ibn Amr in the heart of al-Ird,
Sufyan ibn Amr in the valley of generosity
كَريمَthe nobleman of هَوازِنٍHawazin وَأَميرَand the commander of قَوميmy people
كَريمَ هَوازِنٍ وَأَميرَ قَومي
وَسَبقاًand one who outstrips بِالمَكارِمِin noble deeds كُلِّevery مُجرِracer
وَسَبقاً بِالمَكارِمِ كُلِّ مُجرِ
Hawazin's nobleman and my people's commander,
A generous Hawazin chief and leader of my people
and one who outstrips every racer in noble deeds.
Surpassing all in noble deeds
فَلَستَfor you are not بِواجِدٍable to find قَوماًa people إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle
فَلَستَ بِواجِدٍ قَوماً إِذا ما
أَجادواthey excelled لِلوَفاءِin keeping faith كَأَهلِlike the people of حَجرِHajr
أَجادوا لِلوَفاءِ كَأَهلِ حَجرِ
For you will find no people, when
You will not find a people, when
they excel in keeping faith, like the people of Hajr.
They excel in loyalty, like the people of Hajar
هُمُthey الأَثرَونَthe wealthiest وَالأَعلَونَand the highest-ranking لَمّاwhen
هُمُ الأَثرَونَ وَالأَعلَونَ لَمّا
تَأَمَّرَتِdeliberated القَبائِلُthe tribes كُلَّevery أَمرِmatter
تَأَمَّرَتِ القَبائِلُ كُلَّ أَمرِ
They were the wealthiest and the highest in rank when
They are the most prestigious and lofty when
the tribes deliberated over every matter.
The tribes convene for every matter
أَبواthey refused أَنto يَغدِرواthey betray وَأبىand refused أَبوهُمtheir father
أَبوا أَن يَغدِروا وَأبى أَبوهُم
حَنيفَةَHanifa أَنto يُوازَنَbe matched يَومَon a day of فَخرِboasting
حَنيفَةَ أَن يُوازَنَ يَومَ فَخرِ
They would not betray, nor would their father,
They refused to betray and their father
Hanifa, be matched on a day of boasting.
Hanifah refused to forsake on the day of pride
وَماand not تَدعوcalls out حَنيفَةُHanifa حينَwhen تَلقىit encounters
وَما تَدعو حَنيفَةُ حينَ تَلقى
إِذاwhen اِحمَرَّturned red الجِلادُthe clash بِآلِin the name of the clan of بَكرِBakr
إِذا اِحمَرَّ الجِلادُ بِآلِ بَكرِ
And Hanifa does not call out, when it meets the foe,
And Hanifah does not invoke when facing
as the clash runs red, in the name of Bakr's clan.
The red-hot lash of the clan of Bakr
وَلَكِنand yet يَنتَمونَthey trace their descent إِلىto أَبيهِمtheir father
وَلَكِن يَنتَمونَ إِلى أَبيهِم
حَنيفَةَHanifa يَومَon a day of مَلحَمَةٍfierce battle وَصَبرِand steadfastness
حَنيفَةَ يَومَ مَلحَمَةٍ وَصَبرِ
But they trace their descent to their father,
But they attach themselves to their father
Hanifa, on a day of fierce battle and steadfastness.
Hanifah on the day of fierce combat and patience
وَلَوand if بِأُباضَat Ubad إِذwhen لاقَواthey encountered جِلاداًcombat
وَلَو بِأُباضَ إِذ لاقَوا جِلاداً
بِأَيديat the hands of مِثلِهِمtheir equals وَسُيوفُand swords of كُفرِunbelief
بِأَيدي مِثلِهِم وَسُيوفُ كُفرِ
And had the combat they faced at Ubad
And if it were the Abyssinians when facing a lash
come from their equals' hands and swords of unbelief,
In the hands of their peers and pagan swords
لَذادواthey would have repelled عَنfrom حَريمِهِمِtheir womenfolk بِضَربٍwith blows
لَذادوا عَن حَريمِهِمِ بِضَربٍ
كَأَفواهِlike the mouths of الأَوارِكِthe arak-grazing camels أَيَّwhat هَبرِcleaving
كَأَفواهِ الأَوارِكِ أَيَّ هَبرِ
they would have defended their womenfolk with blows
They would defend their sanctity with blows
like the mouths of arak-grazing camels—what cleaving blows!
Like the mouths of burrowing rats - what cowardice!
وَلَكِنand yet جالَدواthey fought مَلَكاًangels كِراماًnoble
وَلَكِن جالَدوا مَلَكاً كِراماً
هُمُthey فَضّواthey scattered القَبائِلَthe tribes يَومَon the day of بَدرِBadr
هُمُ فَضّوا القَبائِلَ يَومَ بَدرِ
But they fought noble angels—
But they fought a generous king
the very ones who scattered the tribes on the day of Badr.
They who routed the tribes on the day of Badr
