يَحوطُ حَراهُ بِالمُثَقَّفَةِ السُمرِ
He who tended religion's sanctuary has died, and he who
Guarded its precincts with straightened, tawny spears.
أَقامَhe lived on وَشَزرُwhile the twist of الدينِreligion باقٍremaining مَريرُهُits tightly twisted cord
أَقامَ وَشَزرُ الدينِ باقٍ مَريرُهُ

فَأَصبَحَ باقي الدينِ مُنتَكِثَ الشَزرِ
He lived on while religion's cord still held its tight twist;
So what remained of religion was left with its twist unraveled.
وَماand not أَحَدٌanyone إِلّاexcept الخَليفَةُthe caliph مِثلُهُhis equal

And none but the caliph is his equal
Among those who die—may no piled-up grave conceal him!
فَياso, O لَكَfor you مِنof يَومٍa day وَمَرزِئَةٍand a calamity لَهُfor him

So, what a day—and what a calamity for him!
Death's causes pursued him with overpowering force.
