يَمُتُّhe claims kinship بِكَفٍّthrough a hand مِنfrom عُتَيبَةَʿUtaybah أَنbecause رَأىhe saw
يَمُتُّ بِكَفٍّ مِن عُتَيبَةَ أَن رَأى
أَنامِلَهُhis fingers رُكِّبنَwere attached فيin شَرِّthe worst ساعِدِforearm
أَنامِلَهُ رُكِّبنَ في شَرِّ ساعِدِ
He claims kinship through a palm from ʿUtayba, upon seeing

بَنيthe sons of الخَطَفىal-Khaṭafā بِالمَنزِلِin the abode المُتَباعِدِfar-removed
بَني الخَطَفى بِالمَنزِلِ المُتَباعِدِ
And through Qaʿnab as well—far-fetched! Never did Qaʿnab
And from Qaʿnab—far from it! Qaʿnab never lodged
dwell among the sons of al-Khaṭafā in the far-removed abode.

وَلَستَand you are not بِماfor what تَبنيbuilds كُلَيبٌKulayb بِحامِدِone who praises
وَلَستَ بِما تَبني كُلَيبٌ بِحامِدِ
You boast of what Riyāḥ and Jaʿfar build,
You boasted of what Riyāḥ and Jaʿfar build,
yet you do not praise what Kulayb builds.
yet you have no praise for what Kulayb builds.
