May God never take away the right hand that made
May God not cast away the right hand that gave
Abū al-Layl, beneath the night, drink a bucketful of blood.
Abū al-Layl, beneath the night, a bucketful of blood to drink.

Morning swept the coal-black darkness away from her, and then
Ṣubāḥ cleared the cinders from itself, and now
half of my tale was hers at every season.

They are the people—but whenever they draw their swords,
They are the men—except where they unsheathed their swords

And sacrificed flesh from the unconsecrated and the consecrated.

It was they who, after Mālik, set the two graves apart;
They separated their two graves after Mālik;
and whoever bears the clan’s affliction will regret it.
And whoever bears the clan's sickness will regret it.

A plump, married woman from Hilāl set out in the morning,
and came back with the breasts of one bereft of her husband—a widow.
Then returned a widow, her breast bereft of a husband.
