When they fit cruppers to every flapping mount,

they bring them to one of the scant-water pools,

with one more swaggering than they, when they adorn

with their red ochre the two brows of a sturdy beast:

an ass of theirs, from the daughters of al-Kudād,

trotting along with the milk-skin and provision-bag.

So this is my abuse for you; endure

the piercing taunts—I have not overstepped.

Whenever I lop off the noses of the vile,

I rub their cheeks in dust upon the hard, level ground.

Lowland travelers bear their necks down into the lowlands,

and they tread Najd with the upland traveler.

And Jarir was, for his people,

like Thamud's young camel, ill-omened for them.

He gave a single bellow, bearing their doom,

so they became ashes among the heaped ashes.

And it tethers their necks with baseness,

with the nooses of their most ancient baseness,

to a dwelling like the dogs' sleeping-place,

    short-sided, clinging to the ground.

It conceals Kulayb when they gather in full,

yet cannot give a cripple room to sit.
