She journeyed for part of her night, then stopped beside
She traveled part of the night, then halted
Abu Qatan—not the one belonging to al-Mukhariq.
At a place other than one for resting.

مُوافِقَةً يا لَيتَها لَم تُوافِقِ
So she spent the night, while dew kept falling on her saddle,
She and her camel passed the night there,
Consenting—oh, if only she had not consented!
With him striking the ground near her.
فَقَدfor it may be that تَلتَقيcoincide الأَسماءُthe names فيamong الناسِthe people وَالكُنىand the bynames
فَقَد تَلتَقي الأَسماءُ في الناسِ وَالكُنى
كَثيراًoften وَلَكِنand yet لاdo not تَلاقىcoincide الخَلايِقِthe dispositions
كَثيراً وَلَكِن لا تَلاقى الخَلايِقِ
For among people, names and bynames may coincide
Would that she had not met with coincidence,
Often, but their dispositions do not.
For names and titles may concur in people, but natures never.
