فَقَدfor indeed بَلَّغتِنيyou (feminine) have brought me مَنthe one whom كُنتُI was أَرجوhoping for
جَداهُhis bounty رَجاةَin hope of هَطّالٍa cloud raining heavily سَجومِpouring abundantly
For you have brought me to the one from whom I hoped
You have conveyed to me the one I hoped
For bounty, as one hopes for a cloud pouring abundant rain.
To find, with yearning like clouds promising rain.
وَكَمand how many مِنof قاتِلٍa slayer لِلجوعِof hunger فيكُمamong you
ضَروبٍone who strikes repeatedly بِالحُسامِwith the keen sword عَلىupon الصَميمِthe solid core
And how many a slayer of hunger there is among you,
How many are starved among you,
Striking repeatedly with the keen sword at the very core.
Slashing with swords in deadly fight!
وَكَمand how often قَدindeed غَيَّرَhas altered الأَبدانَthe bodies مِنّاof us
عَلىupon شُعبِthe forks of الرِحالِthe camel-saddles مِنَfrom السَمومِthe scorching wind
And how often our bodies have been altered
How many of us have been changed
Upon saddle-forks by the scorching wind.
By the poison sucked from migration’s teats!
وَكائِنand how many قَدindeed شَنَفنَthey raised their heads مُقَلِّصاتٍlean, long-legged she-camels
إِلىtoward صَوتٍa sound وَماand not هُوَit غَيرُother than يَومِa day (as written)
And how many lean, long-legged she-camels have raised their heads
A being is diminished, letting out
Toward a sound—and it is nothing but a 'day' [unclear as written].
A voice, nothing left but a rueful day.

تَفَجُّعَthe anguished lament of هامَتَينِtwo owls عَلىupon الأَرومِthe stone cairns
They answer one another in the deep darkness of night,
Cries echo in the black night,
With the anguished cries of two owls upon the stone cairns.
Two mountain goats bleating on the hill.
