لَستَyou are not بِلاقٍone who meets مازِنِيّاًa man of Mazin مُقَنَّعاًveiled
مَخافَةَfor fear of مَوتٍdeath أَوor مَخافَةَfor fear of نائِلِa seeker of bounty
You will not meet a man of Mazin veiled,
You are not an idle Mazen, hidden or covered,
for fear of death or fear of a seeker of bounty.
Fearing death or fearing the attainment of goals.
تُسارِعُhasten فيin المَعروفِgood deeds فِتيانُthe young men مازِنٍof Mazin
وَتَفعَلُand act فيin البَأساءِadversity فِعلَthe action of المُخايِلِthe lion
Mazin's young men hasten to deeds of kindness,
The youth of Mazen hasten to good deeds,
and in adversity act as the lion does.
And act with courage when faced with calamities.
وَتَحميand defend حِماهاits protected domain وَالمَناياand deaths شَوارِعٌpoised to strike
عَلىover الحَربِwar تَمريdraw out دَرَّهاits milk بِالمَناصِلِwith sword-blades
And they defend their domain while deaths stand poised
They protect those under their care while death roams the streets,
over war; they draw its milk with sword-blades.
Waging war, their spears passing through their enemies.
وَتَرأَبُand mend أَثآءَthe ruptures القُروحِof wounds إِذاwhen وَهَتthey give way

And they mend the rents in wounds when they give way,
They bandage wounds when they gape,
and spare Tamim the task of repelling Bakr ibn Wa'il.
And their pledge suffices to ward off the sons of Wael.
فَنِعمَso, excellent is مُناخَa resting-place الكَلَّfor the weary man أَرعىputs to pasture رِكابَهُhis riding camels
طُروقاًcoming by night إِلَيهِمto them فيin السِنينَthe years المَواحِلِdrought-stricken
So, what a fine resting-place for the weary man who pastures his riding camels,
Excellent is the land that sheltered their steeds
coming to them by night in drought-stricken years.
As they raced towards it during trying times.
وَنِعمَand excellent is مَلاذُa refuge الخائِفينَfor the fearful وَحِرزُهُمand their shelter
وَمَوئلُand a haven ذيone bearing الجُرمِguilt العَظيمِgrave المُوائِلِseeking refuge
And a fine refuge for the fearful, and their shelter,
It is an excellent refuge for the fearful, their shelter,
and a haven for one guilty of a grave offense who seeks refuge.
And haven for those with great, accumulating sins.

Clans ever riding the high ridge of battle,
Comrades who frequented the tumult of battle,
when every gallant, valiant man shrinks from it.
When all the cowardly heroes deserted it.

Fearless plungers into battle's depths; never is seen
Warriors in the thick of the hated melee, unseen,
in them any faltering amid momentous calamities.
Showing no weakness during grave calamities.

They meet swords with their cheeks when bent
Polishing swords with their cheeks when they leaned down
by thrusting into them is every brown, slender lance.
From the stabs that caused every dark-skinned warrior to wither.
إِذاwhen مازِنٌMazin شَدَّتgirds إِلىfor الحَربِwar أَزرَهاits loins

When Mazin girds its loins for war,
When the Mazen girded themselves for battle,
it shields its people from thirsty deaths coming to drink.
They shielded their people and warded off devastating deaths.
بِهِمthrough them يُدرَكُis attained الذَحلُvengeance المُجَرَّبُproven by experience فَوتُهُits elusiveness

Through them is won the vengeance that has proved elusive,
With them, the experienced warrior reaches his goal, his missed opportunity,
and the head of the hulking, overbearing man is severed.
And the head of the arrogant, over-reaching one is severed.
