لعَمرُكَBy your life ماnot لَيثٌa lion بِخَفّانَat Khaffān خادِرٌlying in its lair
لعَمرُكَ ما لَيثٌ بِخَفّانَ خادِرٌ
بِأَشجَعَbraver مِنthan بِشرِBishr اِبنِson of عُتبَةَʿUtbah مُقدِماcharging forward
بِأَشجَعَ مِن بِشرِ اِبنِ عُتبَةَ مُقدِما
By your life, no lion lying in its lair at Khaffān
By your life! No coward with two slippers is a lion
is braver than Bishr son of ʿUtbah charging forward.
Braver than the son of Utba leading the charge
أَباءَhe exacted vengeance بِشَيبانَfrom Shaybān الثُؤورَthe blood debts وَقَدand already رَأىhe saw
أَباءَ بِشَيبانَ الثُؤورَ وَقَد رَأى
بَنيthe sons of فاتِكٍFātik هابواthey feared الوَشيجَthe spear-shafts المُقَوَّماstraightened
بَني فاتِكٍ هابوا الوَشيجَ المُقَوَّما
He exacted blood vengeance from Shaybān, having seen
He refused gray hairs until he saw
the sons of Fātik fear the straightened spear-shafts.
