لِنَنهَضُindeed we rise فيin عامٍa year مِنَof المَحلِdrought رادِفُfollowing
لِنَنهَضُ في عامٍ مِنَ المَحلِ رادِفُ
A year has passed that left no wealth, and we
A year has passed, leaving no wealth, yet we
Indeed rise in another year of drought.

فَقُلتُso I said أَبانُAban اِبنُson الوَليدِal-Walid هُوَhe الَّذيthe one who
فَقُلتُ أَبانُ اِبنُ الوَليدِ هُوَ الَّذي

A young man whose two hands, in pursuit of glory, have never ceased
A young man whose palms did not cease to seek exaltation
Pouring forth torrents of inherited and newly acquired wealth.
Overflowing with munificence and polished wits.

وَلاnor مُخدِرٌone who stays secluded بَينَamid الأُمورِthe affairs الضَعائِفِfeeble
وَلا مُخدِرٌ بَينَ الأُمورِ الضَعائِفِ
By your life, I have not taken to proclaiming my resolve,
By your life, my will has not become womanish
Nor am I one who stays secluded amid feeble affairs.
Nor feeble amidst the feeble affairs.
