Umayya came by night to visit us in a dream,

late at night, when al-Simak was almost sinking.

She passed among disheveled men beside the saddles of she-camels,

narrow-eyed and made to kneel, with a hardy camel among them.

Their humps were worn down in the heart of a trackless waste,

and the strain of exhaustion had left them listless.

She spoke briefly; I awoke, and I see no

dream-visitor who gladdens the one it visits.

So I slept, hoping she would return for another such visit—

Salma; yet seeking such a thing is hard.

She startled my heart when she visited, with such a shock

from her that I remained as though drunk.

Indeed I, on the morning she left with a lover's longing—

mine—was patient, though my life was not yet spent.

My heart broke the morning her caravan departed,

and someone signaled the sundering separation.

    بَل بَينُ مَن صَدَعَ الفُؤادَ يَضيرُ

    No, parting from one you have not loved will not hurt you;

rather, parting from one who cleft your heart hurts.

Leave this; you have lingered long in pursuit of youthful passion,

and gray hairs have come upon you after youth.

And boast, for yours are noble virtues, and those who

raised deeds of honor whose glory is remembered.

And when I boast, I boast without being called a liar,

and mine are lofty honors and their noble legacy.

Indeed, when Mudar turns toward me with affection,

I vie in height with the sun's course as it travels.

Bravo, bravo! Ours is ancient honor, and our might

has subdued the lands, so there is no denying it.
