Ibn al-Masih came to me and did not find me

Stingy toward him with water from our worn waterskin.

So I told him, ‘Drink its last drops, for I

Fear for you on account of your eye and the guide.

I see one eye already rolled back, and another

Turning its gaze, feeble and dull.’

And for the ‘Anzi I poured out a full bucket,

With which I relieved the heat and burning thirst.

He said, ‘Our ancestry is Khindif, except that we

Followed the water and the shady thickets.’
