We advanced against Yemeni Najran and its people,

and Najran is a land whose chieftains had not been subdued.

With a host of mingled voices—in its midst you hear

a murmur like that of sandgrouse, unintelligible even to its utterer.

Its command is ours; piebald horses cannot be distinguished in its midst.

Loud is its battle-clamor; its tribes come from every clan.

The daughters of the Harithites among them seem

like gazelles of Sarim, whose dense thickets have not been parted.

When a halt comes due for it, fires are kindled there

for its rear, on the highest ground, by its vanguard.

The open land remains choked with it,

and its advancing ranks clear the choked waterholes.

You see food-seeking birds, already assured

by its camps of a full meal of fine-bred young stock.

When alarmed, they wave the banner of Ibn Habis,

and call upon one whose nature and character are noble.

He strove to avenge the clan's wrongs, which had stirred

the protective pride of one superior to those who rival him.

So he avenged them, gaining greater glory and eminence,

and goodness; of all people, the doer of good enjoys it most.

He made Najran's people see stars in broad daylight,

and exacted from them every blood-debt he sought.

And he attacked the people of al-Jawf at dawn, while al-Jawf was secure,

with a host like young locusts—time's troubles are many.

So over Hamdan lingered a day that came upon them

with the direst ill fortune, at noon and in its late-afternoon hours.

And Kinda—he left them no spirited defender,

nor a refuge whose strongholds were not overrun.
