تَذَكَّرتُI remembered أَينَwhere الجابِرونَthose who mend قَناتَناour spear-shaft
فَقُلتُso I said بَنيthe sons of عَمّيmy paternal uncle أَبانَAbān اِبنِson of دارِمِDārim
I thought: where are those who mend our spear-shaft?
I remembered where the rainmakers built our dam
So I said: the sons of my uncle Abān ibn Dārim.
So I said, my cousin, son of Darim's house
رَمَواthey cast لِيَfor me رَحليmy camp إِذwhen أَنَختُI made my camel kneel إِلَيهِمُamong them
بِعُجمِwith stout ones of الأَوابيthe unyielding she-camels وَاللِقاحِand the milk-giving she-camels الرَوائِمِfond of their young
They showered my camp, when I knelt my camel among them,
They pitched my saddlebags when I leaned toward them
with stout, unyielding she-camels and tender nursing mothers.
With foreign camels and active she-camels too
لَهُمthey have عَدَدٌa multitude فيamong قَومِهِمtheir people شافِعُdoubling الحَصىthe pebbles
وَدَثرٌand an abundance مِنَof الأَنعامِlivestock غَيرُnot الأَصارِمِsmall herds
Their numbers among their people double the count of pebbles,
For them a number among their people, asking for justice
and their livestock is abundant, not mere small herds.
And a cloak of livestock, not barren
تَجاوَزتُI passed by أَقواماًclans إِلَيكُمto you وَإِنَّهُمthough they indeed
لَيَدعونَنيthey do indeed invite me فَاِختَرتُكُمso I chose you لِلعَظائِمِfor grave affairs
I passed other clans by to come to you, though they
I passed by other tribes, though they
do indeed invite me; so I chose you for grave affairs.
Summoned me, but I chose you for great deeds
وَكُنتُمand you were أُناساًa people كانَwas يُشفىbeing healed بِمالِكُمthrough your wealth
وَأَحلامِكُمand your wisdom صَدعُthe breach of الثَأىruin المُتَفاقِمِever-worsening
And you were a people whose wealth would heal,
You were people whose wealth and dreams could heal
together with your wisdom, the breach of deepening ruin.
The widening agony of separation
وَإِنَّand indeed مُناخيmy campsite فيكُمُamong you سَوفَwill يَلتَقيgather
بِهِat it الرَكبُthe riders مِنfrom نَجدٍNajd وَأَهلُand the people of المَواسِمِthe seasonal gatherings
And surely at my campsite among you will gather
My resting place with you will meet
the riders from Najd and those attending the seasonal gatherings.
Caravans from Najd and pilgrims too
وَأَينَand where مُناخيmy campsite بَعدَكُمbeyond you إِنif نَبَوتُمُyou turn away
عَلَيَّfrom me وَهَلand do تَنبوglance off صُدورُthe points of الصَوارِمِkeen swords
And where could I camp beyond you, if you turn away
But where is my resting place after you, if you abandon me
from me? Do the points of keen swords ever glance off?
Can the breasts of warriors abandon at all?
