So you, though not he himself, are his companion,
Since you were not his companion,
With the two martyrs and the Truthful One, within the wall,
Along with the two martyrs and the truthful one in Sura,

In the lofty chambers of Paradise, which were made
In the highest chambers of Paradise, made
For them there, through striving that was gratefully acknowledged.
For them there as reward for their blessed effort,

Suhayb prayed three times, then handed it down
Upon the son of Affan, as unrestricted sovereignty,
To Ibn Affan as an unrestricted kingdom,

A bequest from Abu Hafs to the six of them—
A will from Abu Hafs to his six,
They were beloved friends of one rightly guided and commissioned,
Who were beloved friends of the Guided One and his appointees,

Emigrants who deemed Uthman the closest among them,
The Emigrants who saw Uthman as the closest of them
When they pledged allegiance to him for it—by the House and the Mount!
When they pledged allegiance to him for it, the House, and Mt. Sinai,

So it shall remain yours, and God has established it
So will it remain for you, and God has made it firm
Among you, until the Most Merciful blows into the Trumpet.
Among you until the Trumpet blast of the Merciful,
إِنّيindeed I أَقولُI say لِأَصحابيto my companions وَدونَهُمُand before them
مِنَof السَماوَةِSamawah خَرقٌa vast desert expanse خاشِعُlow-lying القورِthe flat-topped hills
Indeed, I say to my companions, while before them lies
Indeed, I say to my companions and those below them
A vast waste of Samawah, its hillocks lying low:
From the nobility, reverent, dignified,
سيرواtravel on وَلاand do not تَحفِلواcare about إِتعابَexhausting راحِلَةٍa riding-camel

Travel on, and do not mind exhausting a riding-camel,
March on and do not worry about fatiguing a mount
To a leader made victorious by the sword of God.
To an imam with God's sword, victorious,
إِنّيindeed I أَتانيcame to me كِتابٌa letter كُنتُI was تابِعَهُfollowing it

Indeed, a letter came to me, whose bidding I followed,
A letter came to me I was waiting for
To me from you—and I did not come with the caravan.
To me from you, but I did not come with the caravan,

No she-camel bore a man of the common folk
No she-camel carried a man like me when the wind
Like me, when the wind enfolded me upon the camel-saddle:
Wrapped me in the garment,

Nobler in tribe, and more loyal during a crushing calamity,
I honored a people, and was true in the midst of those covered
To one burdened by the tribe's blood-debts, left breathless,
In the blood of the people, confused,
إِلّاexcept قُرَيشاًQuraysh فَإِنَّfor indeed اللَهَGod فَضَّلَهاfavored them

Except Quraysh, for God has favored them
Except for Quraysh, for God granted it virtue
Alongside prophethood, through Islam and goodness.
Along with prophethood, Islam, and goodness,

Of the house of Harb, and among the A'yas is their dwelling;
From the clan of Harb, and their dwellings in the hillforts
They bequeathed you an edifice with a lofty wall.
They and their inheritance left you a lofty-walled building,

Harb and Marwan are your two forefathers, to whom belong
Harb and Marwan, your two ancestors, theirs
Mounds of immense bulk among the hills.
Were the great assemblies from the hilltops,

You see the faces of Marwan's sons and think them,
You see the faces of the Marwanids, deeming them
At the encounter, polished dinars.
When encountered, pure gold dinars,

Those who strike for justice when they strike
Striking for truth when they strike
On the day of battle, and they are no cowards.
On the day of meeting, and they are no procrastinators
