O Eid, you have returned—so where are the garden and the lute?
Alas for my soul! And where are the wine and the graceful women?

Nay, where are my heart's beloveds and the promised meetings?
Eid, in what state have you returned, O Eid?

قلبي أسيرٌ وربّ البيت عندهم
With what has passed, or is some matter renewed in you?
My heart is captive in their keeping, by the Lord of the House.

A barrier has been set, alas, between me and them.
Where are the comforters? The cup has overflowed—where are they?

As for the beloveds, the desert lies between me and them.
If only, then, deserts lay between me and you, with deserts before them!

Then, O drinking companions, is there one among you who can tell me:

Yesterday, the fruit clusters of union were within reach;
and today, through ill fortune, they have become distant.

My day is like my yesterday; my yesterday is black, and so is my tomorrow.
