وإلى اللقاءِ صباح يوم العيد
Kiss my smiling lips—I would give my life for you; leave my neck alone.
I kissed you farewell, my smile left me
And until we meet again on the morning of Eid.
Until we meet again on Eid morning

باللومِ والتعنيفِ والتهديدِ
Why not, when my family—woe to my family!—have gone too far
Why not, and woe to my family! They went too far
with blame, harsh rebukes, and threats.
With blame, rebuke and threats

Do not approach our house; they have sworn
Do not come near our house, they swore
to cut, if you come, the cord of my jugular vein.
To cut you off if you come, my veins tied

I wonder if their suspicions aroused
about me by my rising and sitting in the darkness,
By my walking at night and sitting

That's the way of the lost

What foolishness and ignorance separated
me from the devoted, love-stricken lover.
Me from the slender, delicate one

O you who complain so much, have mercy; calm down,
You who constantly complain, be calm
and be gentle with the ill-fated poet.
And gentle with the dejected poet

Dawn has not yet broken, and your family are asleep;
Morning has not dawned, your family sleeps
rise with me; let us sip the wine; then go back.
Rise with me, we will sip wine and make music

Then she hesitated, fidgeted, and sighed,
She hesitated, wavered, sighed
and wept; her two forearms encircled my neck.
Cried, and my hand encircled her neck

وعرائسُ الإلهامِ دمعُ الغيدِ
So I composed a poem inspired by the tears,
I composed a poem inspired by her tears
and the brides of inspiration are graceful women's tears.
The muses of inspiration are the tears of the gazelle

And I prostrated myself in reverence and veneration before her,
I prostrated in reverence and exaltation to her
and my soul wept, and my prostration lasted long.
My soul was elevated and long was my prostration

Then she moaned and yielded, and tears filled
She moaned, surrendered, her eyes brimmed
my eyes, despite my fortitude and steadfastness.
Despite my composure and resilience

She said, “Come to the little shore.” I said, “No.”
She said come to al-Shuwaitee, I said no
For every faultfinder and envious soul is there.
There lies every critic and envier

the daughter of the date palms or the daughter of the grape-cluster.

the union of wasting sickness, worry, and sleeplessness.

My lament saddened you a little while ago,
And my songs your laments, so listen to my warbling
and your lament saddened me; so hear my warbling.

Why not, now that the creeping stir has spread, and aloft has soared
Soared to distant imaginings
my soul across imagination's distant horizon?
