It is no festival but a funeral, O my companions.

So fill the cup if you wish to torment me.

Drink the wine, O boon companions, with pleasure,

and leave me to sip the bitter sap of spurge.

Indeed, the strings' song saddens my heart,

and cups of wine stir sorrow.

O companions of youth, leave me; no good comes,

not a whit, from blaming me; what ails me is enough.

I am a spirit that wails, now upon the

earth, and now upon the backs of clouds.

I am a stranger in this life,

    wretched, lost behind the fog.

In love, O my companions, I am wretched

and happy—oh, my joy and my dejection!

I am parched—alas for my miserable lot!

I am sleepless—alas for my long sobbing!

I am distraught with longing—who is there for my heart and soul?

I am bewildered, O people of understanding.

    فاسألوني وأنصتوا لجوابي

    I am drunk, though I have drunk no wine;

so question me, and listen to my answer.

O my companions, do not dig me—if ever I

die of longing—a grave in a barren waste.

    لعلّ الأمواج تبكي شبابي

    Dig me a grave on the seashore;

perhaps the waves will weep for my youth.

And bury me among the rocks; perhaps

my terror, my fury, and my unrest will subside.

O rocks of the shore, by your Lord, should

my loved ones pass by my resting place here,

tell them of the distress I endured

and the varied pains and afflictions.

It displeased them that I lived lovestruck, crooning to them

    with my tender, sweet verses.

And I am a poet, created to sing,

not to recite the Qur'an in the prayer niche.

So are love and love poetry a sin?

Ah, alas for lost hopes and desires!

Then let me die for their sake, with an untroubled

mind; perhaps I shall find rest beneath the dust.

    ت فأين الصبا وأين التصابي

    O lovely summer nights, you have returned;

so where is youth, and where is youthful play?

Where is the daughter of the vines? Where is my beloved?

Where is my cup—nay, how far from me are my companions!

How often I consoled myself with hopes! Does

a mirage's gleam quench the parched one's burning thirst?

Ask the sand, the rocks, and the waves of the

sea about me, O desire of your peers.

I shattered my reed pen against my will.

Alas for my grief—and I have closed my book!

Then, after that, I broke my pitcher

and my oud, and did not spare my cups.

O my companions, woe is me! The fox has turned lion,

and the forest's lions have turned into ewes.

And the fierce, rending lion has become a ram,

submissive to dogs against his will.

And my nightingale met its death when

the pavilion became a stage for the raven.

And the wing of my life is broken,

and my steed is stumbling on the racecourse.

O my companions, Time has exalted the slave

and subjected the free to grievous torment,

after hounding the heads and banishing

them—and the arena was choked with tails.
