إغتالhe murdered قلبيmy heart ياO لهfor him منof جائرa tyrant
وأرانيand he showed me دمهits blood فيin ناظريmy eye
He murdered my heart—what a tyrant!
My heart was murdered, O what an oppressor!
And showed me its blood in my eye.
And he showed me its blood in my eyes.
وعجيبand strange كلall ذاthis منfrom هاجريthe one who forsakes me
وإذاand whenever مثّلتهI pictured him فيin خاطريmy thoughts
How strange, all this from the one who forsakes me!
Strange is all that from my companion,
And whenever I picture him in my thoughts,
And if I imagine him in my mind,
صفّقclapped القلبthe heart إليهtoward him وهفاand yearned
أخبرواtell, all of you منthe one who صدّturned away عنّيfrom me وغوىand strayed
My heart claps for him and yearns.
The heart applauds him and inclines towards him.
Tell the one who turned away from me and strayed:
Tell the one who turned away from me and went astray,
لستI do not اسلوهforget him وإنand even if طالlasts long النوىseparation
رغمdespite ماwhat قاسيتI suffered منfrom جورthe cruelty of الجوىlove's anguish
I do not forget him, though separation lasts long,
I will not reproach him, even if the separation is prolonged,
Despite what I have suffered from love's cruel anguish.
Despite the injustice of separation I endured,
أناI سهرانsleepless علىfaithful to عهدthe covenant of الهوىlove
لمnot أنمI sleep وهوand he بعهديto my covenant ماnot وفاkept faith
I lie awake, faithful to love's covenant;
I am awake, faithful to the pact of love,
I have not slept, yet he has not kept his pledge to me.
I did not sleep while he did not keep his promise to me.
لستI am not بالساليone who forgets ولاnor بالصابرone who patiently endures
فحبيبيfor my beloved لمnot يزلceased to be فيin خاطريmy thoughts
I am neither one who forgets nor one who patiently endures;
I am neither indifferent nor patient,
For my beloved is still in my thoughts.
For my beloved is still in my thoughts,
آهah ماwhat قولكمyour opinion بالنافرof the one who shuns
أناI لوif ناديتهI called to him ياO هاجريyou who forsake me
Ah, what do you say of the one who shuns me?
Oh, what do you say to the aloof one?
Were I to call to him, “O you who forsake me,
If I called him saying: My companion!
هذهthis روحيmy soul فخذهاso take it ماnot احتفىhe showed concern
منwho لصبّfor a lovesick man باتspent the night منهوكdepleted of القوىstrength
Here is my soul—take it,” he would pay no heed.
He whose love keeps me weak and feeble,
Who will aid a lovesick man who has spent the night drained of strength?
His affliction grew hard and separation weakened me,
داؤهhis illness استعصىdefied cure وأضناهand wore him down الجوىlove's anguish
هكذاthus يعملworks بالصبّupon the lovesick man النوىseparation
His illness defies cure, and love's anguish has worn him down.
This is how separation eats away at the sincere lover,
Thus does separation work upon the lovesick.
So describe to me, my friend, the remedy,
فصفاso prescribe, you two ليfor me ياO خليليّmy two friends الدواthe remedy

So prescribe me a remedy, O my two friends,
And I see no solution but to stop describing him.
Yet I think the solution is for you not to prescribe.
In the name of the rights of love, he knows he did wrong,

وبتعذيبيand in tormenting me حبيبيmy beloved مسرفexcessive
The unjust one knows the rights of love,
And by tormenting me, my beloved went too far,
And my beloved goes to excess in tormenting me.
I have not stopped, while passion is destroying my soul,

مستهامdistraught with love فيin هواهlove for him مدنفwasting away
I remain, while longing destroys my soul,
Infatuated by his love, utterly devastated,
Distraught with love for him and wasting away;
Should I be content, infatuated and devastated?
أترضّىI seek to appease مستهاماdistraught with love مدنفاwasting away
هلdoes يقاسيsuffer ماwhat أقاسيI suffer أحدanyone
I seek to appease him, lovesick and wasting away.
Does anyone suffer what I suffer?
Does anyone suffer what I suffer?
Perhaps tomorrow hopes will revive,

ويفيand keeps faith بالوعدwith the promise ظبيa gazelle مفردsolitary
So perhaps tomorrow will revive my hopes,
And the lone gazelle will fulfill his promise,
And a lone gazelle will keep his promise.
He truly promised me a secret meeting.

A tryst with him was assured to me in secret,
But I did not believe him until he broke his word.
Then no sooner had I believed it than he broke his word.
