Indeed, for loving you, how many a fault-finder has blamed me.

How many times has your phantom visited me with reproach?

I came upon beauty’s snare, and it caught me.

O neighbor of the valley, I was enraptured, and there returned to me

from your memory something resembling dreams.

    Beware of desertion, enchantress of all creation;

I fear that desertion will leave me shrouded in earth.

By the Lord of the Sacred House, I swear: I shall never see your like.

I pictured your love in memory and in sleep,

and memories are the years’ tale-telling echo.

Sister of the gazelle, shall I ever see you alone—

one day among the days? Might there be a visit?

If you have punished your lover with cold estrangement,

I have passed through the gardens, by a hillock—

lush—where I used to meet you.

By God, how sweet is reunion after separation!

Before our meeting, all strength within me had shattered.

When separation’s term, with all it held, came to an end,

I had not known how sweet love’s embrace could be

until my arm moved gently and enfolded you.

You looked at me, and I said, “Have mercy—sheathe

this Indian blade; I am neither unjust nor an aggressor.”

Have you forgotten the day I made your cheek my place of prostration,

and the boughs of your willow-form swayed gracefully in my hand?

O gazelle of the valley, plunderer of reason,

have you forgotten the day you awakened hope within my heart?

Have you forgotten the day I came in a deep, still dusk,

and entered amid two nights—your tresses and the darkness—

and kissed your mouth, radiant as the dawn?

I caressed her; she burst into laughter and swayed.

I embraced her; she reeled and drew away.

Do you remember when our breasts drew near,

and the language of speech fell silent—and addressed

my eyes, in love’s language, your eyes?

    قسما بشعرك وهو فاحم أسود

    I swear by your beauty—a beauty without peer;

    I swear by your hair, intensely coal-black;

I swear by your cheek, rosy with modesty:

there was no yesterday in time’s lifetime, nor any tomorrow—

time gathered itself and became the day I met you.
