كلا ولا الراح راح بعدما انزاحوا
Companionship is no companionship, nor are joys joys.
No joy is joy, no delights are delights
No, nor is wine wine, now that they have departed.
Neither is rest, rest, after they went away

They went away, and I had not disclosed love's secret to them,
They left, and I did not search for the secret of passion for them
Nor had they revealed their complaint to me, nor confided.
They did not make their complaints known to me, nor voiced them

O companion! If only you had restrained my palm after them
My tears, though the eye's tears betray secrets.
My tears for tearful eyes are betraying

It is no wonder the drunkard of the cup is complacent

O people, my soul has poured forth in anguish and sorrow.
O people! My soul flowed with sorrow and grief
Why did you not excuse love's dear folk when they wailed?
Why did you not excuse the passionate when they complained?

For God's sake, pardon me, for time has made me swallow
For God’s sake, forgive me, for fate made me drink
The bitter sap of despair; whoever is given it wails endlessly.
The drink of despair, and who gives it to drink, comforts

I have suffered through love; may whoever is happy in it not live.
I suffered from love while the happy one did not live by it
Indeed, misery in love is a key to the unseen.
Indeed suffering from passion, the unseen is its key

O friend! I am not content, so drink it
Undiluted, while I sing: when, O friend, shall I rest?
Pure, and sing, O friend, when will I be content?

All the dear ones are in amusement and joy
And lutes and cups from you are enough for them.
It is enough for them that you have a flute and cups

And it is enough for my heart to have delightful pains
Mute, while longing has a spark-striking flint within it.
Silent, and in it a spark that kindles for ecstasy

I have tawny wine made of my tears, with which I quench
I have from my tears a torrent with which
My heart's burning thirst; my streaming tears are wine.
I express the anguish of my heart and my flowing tear

Seeking solace, and how many spirits are in the air

Ask the late afternoons and the nighttime conversations, seeking solace;
Ask the late nights and predawn darkness while seeking
Perhaps evenings and mornings will answer you.
Maybe the dawns and forenoons will answer you

How often have I closed my eyelids while my dreams wandered
Away from it, and visions and phantoms draw near.
Away from him, and imaginations and ghosts approached

Beauty, nor does it hold splendor or joy.
Beauty, but no splendor or delights in it

I bade them farewell with weeping, so my eyelids overflow

Such is love: insistent longing and sorrow
And thus is passion, yearning wound up with sorrow
That wears one down, tears, and worry ever pressing within it.
Oppressive, tears, and in it confusion mingled

Love grew serious after the meeting-place grew distant, though
Passion turned serious after the visits came to an end
I had thought before that love was a jester.
When before I thought love was but jesting

Nor the nighttime companion—God preserve you—carefree.
Nor is the night companion - may God give him comfort - watchful

Neither the daughter of the vine with cups laughing
No, nor does the lute sing out in the hours before dawn.
No, and nor is the flute at dawn whistling

So will the spring of reunion prolong its absence,
Will the spring of union prolong its absence?
Or not, so that spirits may embrace the lovers?
Or no, will it embrace the souls of lovers?

Had time's brief slumber lasted, there would have been no toying
A slumber of fate, even if prolonged, would not have harmed us
With us by fate's vicissitudes; time's turning sweeps all away.
Had circumstances not toyed with us, and the course of fate overwhelmed

So who is there for my soul and heart after they left?

O you whom I was passionate about, not the beauty of his form
That enticed my heart, for beauty fades.
Tempted my heart, for beauty passes away

May God have mercy, the journey was long and the night dark
So unveil yourself, for your face is radiant and gleaming.
Dawn, and your shining face is illuminating and radiant

For you are its captain, and the heart its sailor.
When you are its captain, and the heart its sailor?
