    Mine is an eye that has never known what slumber is,

    and a heart that ailments have ravaged.

    خدعوها بقولهم حسناء

    The day she turned away, led by the watchers,

    they deceived her by calling her a beauty;

    and beautiful women are beguiled by praise.

    I cried when parting came and was decreed:

    “Ah, you! For love's sake, sate me with embraces!”

    She disowned me and heaped reproach upon me.

    Did she, I wonder, feign forgetting my name when

    the names in her affections multiplied?

    I wonder, does her heart ache

    after she was kept apart from the lovesick one?

    So ask her, that I may know, why,

    if she sees me, she turns away, as though there had never

    يوم جاءت فقلت جنّ الظلام

    been anything between her and me.

    The day she came, I said, “Darkness has fallen;

    do not fear: the talebearers are asleep.”

    She gazed, then approached—and love is

    a glance, then a smile, then a greeting,

    then talk, then a tryst, then a meeting.

    وهبتني ولم تزل تنثني

    She bestowed a boon on me from her sweet lips;

    she gave me, still swaying,

    a kiss—and it is all I desire.

    The day we were together—do not ask how we were—

    we gave each other love to drink, as much as we wished.

    The day she said, “Life is not sweet,

    my beloved, for one whom the beloved has shunned.

    So take my pledge, for dawn is near,

    and over us stands a guardian of chastity,

    against whom passions have struggled to exhaustion.”

    The day we rose and she turned away, there rose

    sighs from my heart; and she vowed.

    Then, when my heart grew calm and she leaned close,

    she tugged against me at the defiant one's robe and said:

    “You are the people, O poets!

    For you are drunk on the wine of beauty,

    واتخذتم حب الغواني شعارا

    unceasingly, through your night and the day,

    and you have made love of beautiful women your watchword;

    so fear God concerning maidens' hearts,

    for maidens' hearts are air.”
