Bring it, cupbearer, bring the daughter of the date palms.

For perhaps it will quench—perhaps—my burning thirst.

Bring my cup; why hesitate? And drink.

For it suffices me in my ordeal and is my advocate.

Bring it; perhaps I can dissolve my sorrows

in it; leave the faultfinder's nonsense.

Leave the lute, and pour it for me to the lament

of my heart, suffering's companion, and my wailing.

Its prohibition was decreed, but not for us,

only for every base and ignorant man.

For in the anguished man's breast a fire blazes,

kindled by sorrows at the moment of parting.

My friend, how does one find the way to patience?

Answer me, by God: is there a way?

Have they found solace, or died of love? For I

have found no youth after them to pity me.

    ودائي استشرى فمن للعليل

    My beloved, this wound will never heal;

my sickness has spread—who will tend the ailing?

My doubts have wreaked havoc in my breast,

and my certainty—alas!—is no protector of mine.

Ah, wellspring of my heart, how narrow

my bounds have grown; I have become like a madman.

The waves' song brought no relief to my soul,

nor did cups of wine heal it.

The evening breeze has turned to flame

from my sighs, and is no longer cool and moist.

O shores of the Gulf, you have extinguished

my feeling—what do you reap from my torpor,

but burning incense at every moment,

    and manifold piping and drumming?

Then overflow, O sea; it is time to overflow, and engulf

every barren dwelling among the settlements.

Hoot, owls, hoot; do not be afraid,

and caw, ravens, over the ruins.

And shriek, south wind, into every face

that scowls, and lash the intruder's eyelid.

Stand still, sun of the midday blaze, and pour it

as spittle boiling in the glutton's belly.

Come forth, phantoms, in the pitch darkness

of error, and circle the clique of charlatans.

Dance, and spit it out as deadly venom,

O vipers of depravity, at every base man.

And tear away, scorpions of hatred, from

my foe what remains of his devoured heart.

And breathe your last, poor man; no blame

upon the altar of the idle usurer.

    And scatter thorns, bitter sleeplessness,

upon the bed of the fretful impostor.

And wash your soul, repentant traitor,

with tears, for they are the best cleanser.

And beat your breast, daughter of purity,

and weep for him; to God belongs every bereaved mother's heart.

O shores of the Gulf, you have shattered my hopes

and burdened the shoulders of the man responsible.

You, stage of sorrow and calamities,

and every kind of torment and abuse,

have hemmed me in, my wing broken.

Alas for my grief, my bewilderment, my daze!

But for my beloved, no stay would have pleased me

in you, prison of every noble, free man.

For my life is a play of

one act in you, though it has many acts.

I performed it upon the stage of deprivation

and misery; my performance is over.

There is sickness in my heart, and my soul holds what it holds,

and wasting illness has ravaged my slender body.

And in my breast lies a buried secret—oh,

how I fear for it from my lovesick heart!

Ah, who will offer me even a little consolation?

If I have not died yet, I shall before long.

Dig me a grave upon the seashore,

my companion in solitude, my noonday resting place.

The world of misery has brought me no joy—oh,

my yearning and longing for the unknown world!

O shores of the Gulf, you have scattered

my dreams; leave me my feelings and inclinations.

For in you I have—love is a fetter—

a supple youth, noble in form and character,

with a radiant brow and a graceful figure,

and tipsy eyes and a smooth cheek,

and a face like the full moon, its radiance shining,

    or like the spring sun at its setting;

a nature gentler than dawn's smile,

    and a spirit purer than Salsabil;

    a coyness sweeter than a maiden's dream

at the dawn of her honeyed love.

His love knocked on my heart, which was then

innocent, and found a warm welcome.

So I kept silent that day; never has

a heart borne a burden like my heavy love.

I hid from him my dreams of love

when we were together, for fear of misconstruction.

Years passed—alas for my ill fortune—

and my state needs no elaboration.

The distance of separation folded away, and we met

after much hardship and much gossip.

I poured out tears before him,

while he seemed bewildered, as one stunned,

stirring the sand, head bowed, while I

complained to him of the pains of my grievous illness.

Ah, if only his flowing saliva,

sweet as honey, were my tears, and his hair my handkerchief!

Ah, how my heart thirsts for a tear

of tenderness from his kohl-lined eyelid!

Ah, the sight of tears, those daughters of poetry,

in the eye of the modest, bashful one!

Then we broke our silence and embraced,

and took to hugging and kissing.

And we drank the daughter of the date palms—how sweet

it was in union's sheltering shade!

We grew drunk, and I began reciting poetry,

while he listened to my honeyed verse.

A night whose memories fill my mind,

my lantern in the darkness of sorrow.

A night unlike the Night of Decree, but better,

better, by God, than a thousand generations.

My religion is love, and my tears my prophet

when I yearn, and their revelation my Gospel.

Many a silence, my friend, is more affecting—indeed,

more eloquent in its enchantment than Revelation.

Lovers' tears are an outpouring of eternity,

and poetry that puts the master poets' verse to shame.

And lovers' sweet murmurs in the garden of union

are cooing that beguiles, unlike any other cooing.

And the fluttering of hearts is a kind of

glorifying God at reunion and proclaiming His oneness.

O bride of inspiration, your tryst is on the shore,

    the lovers' refuge at eventide.

Then to our meeting there, and bring forth poetry

from the inspiration of my tears shed in vain,

and my sighs over hopes, and my gasps,

    as they lie slain upon my murdered certainty;

and the shrieking of sorrows in the soul's core,

    and the long, searing silence of grief;

and the wailing of hopes in the depths of despair,

and the sobbing of the tormented, forsaken man.

Ease the breast of one tormented by love,

so sleep may return to my weary eyelid.

    ولا عاشَ كلٌّ صبٍّ بخيلِ

    For hopes, visions, and the dream of youth are illusion;

and may no miserly lover live!
