Play the oud, O my second deity.

And sing, O love: you are the destroyer and the builder.

Play the oud, for doubt has beset me.

O solace of the heart, revive my dead sorrows.

And bring a song, O nourishment of the soul,

To revive hope in the heart of the wretched sufferer.

O tranquil-eyed one, while dreams wander,

Hurry, by your Lord, and fill my second cup.

And fill another to the brim for yourself, my beloved, with

Iraq's wine; leave Iran's tawny wine aside.

How delicious it was unmixed, and how sweet

When mixed! So give it to me to drink, and dispel my sorrows.

Indeed, in it I smell the fragrance of the Two Rivers,

Lavender's scent, and the aroma of myrtle and moringa.

And how often I have seen al-Karkh's gazelles roaming,

    Drunkenly, among roses and pools.

Rise and pour out the soul in melodies, at leisure,

For I have nothing but them; they are my sacrificial offering.

And let us drink Zahle's heady wine in the morning; and when

You have finished, [sing] 'Be safe, O land of Lebanon.'

Play the oud, and let us get drunk—there is no blame.

And let us revive dead wishes with the tavern's daughter.

Here are love and its sweet songs; here

Are the brides of inspiration; I meet them, and they meet me.

Here are the sands; here the waves are dancing,

And here I fashioned my poems and my meters.

Here are purified nectar and visions; and here

Is the playground of pearls—houris and youths.

Here are cups of heady wine; how often, how often they have glided,

Swaying proudly among my evening companions and drinking friends.

O place where inspiration descends, O playground of our childhood,

Alas, if only the one I love loved me!

I consoled myself with hopes, but the hopes were false,

And I could bear no more; overwhelming longing wore me down.

For the eye dried up, and from grief the soul flowed

As tears, and—alas!—both eyes overflowed with them.

O pasture of the soul, while sorrows rage,

I remain true to the pledge as long as day and night recur.

Winter has come and summer has gone—alas!

Have you not heard my melodies in night's darkness?

I have come, weakened, my hopes shattered,

To confide to you my [longings?] and my sorrows.

For your sandy little shore did not delight me,

No, nor did its silvery waves console me,

Nor the smiling late afternoons and predawn hours,

Nor did your breeze comfort me as it passed.

For love is an incurable disease with no remedy.

So do not be deceived by what the two lovers display.
