    A memory stirred slumbering sorrows.

Did what grieved me on Eid grieve you?

A searing, crying anguish, and a melancholy

    mute—alas for misery and deprivation!

Alas for wretchedness! No beloved with whom I hope

for union, nor a brother who has comforted me.

A sigh cracked my cup on Eid morning,

which I released from my burning heart.

Then, when the morning wine spilled, I wished

that I had taken my evening draught of streaming tears.

And so I replaced it, and thought that

wine would quench the burning thirst of the parched.

So I drank it neat, but did not grow drunk, nor

rejoice; my second cup deepened the sorrow.

I do not sing, O cupbearer; and pardon

me if I lament, O my companions.

Each man among you laughs with his cup

in delight, while my cup—woe to it!—made me weep.

    And you drank and rejoiced—how

happy you were with your cups, and how wretched I was!

Cease your reproaches; I am not the first wretch

    to exchange joys for sorrows.

Your insistence makes my heart bleed, so accept

my excuse; your reproach hurts my feelings.

I shall not thank those wishing me a happy Eid; rather,

my profound thanks go to whoever consoled me for it.

By God, I offered no Eid greetings to myself,

no, nor to my family, nor my brothers.

Except you, O my full moon—here are my greetings

for Eid, from the depths of my captive heart.

O you whose pledges I kept, while you broke my

pledge; I answered your call, but you defied me.

I gave you my love, but you turned away, mocking

me; you made my envier gloat and shunned me.

And did you not know that your abandonment subjected me

to cruel torment, wasted me, and wore me away?

And I—may I be your ransom—am a poet; all I need from this

world and all it holds is a young man to care for me.

I pour for him at times, and he pours for me; and if

I murmur tenderly to him through my poems, he murmurs back.

And he confides his sorrow to me when I confide to him

my sorrow, while the two cups listen.

And when we drink it to the whisper of the east wind,

joy cries out and both hearts applaud.

O ornament of the world, O world of wishes,

    of poetry, dreams, and melodies!

Eid is my Eid the day you pour for me, and I

pour you wine while you are in my arms.

Eid is my Eid the day I pluck from your

    cheeks, O my desire, anemones.

Eid is the day of whispers and intimate talk, until

    expression comes through heartbeats.

Eid is the day we sleep with slumber filling our eyelids,

embracing, as though we were two children.

Eid is the day both hearts applaud out of

joy at meeting, and both souls cry out.

Eid is the day I delight the eye that

you kept sleepless, with your bewitching beauty.
