وصُغتُand I fashioned منfrom ذَوبهاtheir molten substance شِعريmy poetry وألحانيand my melodies
وصُغتُ من ذَوبها شِعري وألحاني
I melted my sorrows in a goblet of tawny wine.
I melted my sorrows in a goblet of wine
And from their molten substance I fashioned my poetry and melodies.
And from its melting, my poetry and melodies were forged
وبتُّand I spent the night فيin غَلَسِpredawn gloom الظلماءِdarkness أُرسِلُهاI send them forth

من غورِ روحي ومن أعماقِ وجداني
And I spent the night sending them forth in darkness's predawn gloom,
I send it in the darkness of night
From the depths of my soul and the depths of my feelings.
From the depths of my soul and my innermost conscience

ضاقَت بغلٍّ وأحقادٍ وأضغان
O night, breasts had no room for my complaint, yet never
O night, hearts have narrowed with my complaints
Lacked room for rancor, hatreds, and grudges.
Yet they did not narrow with malice or grudges
فجئتُso I came أشكوI complain إليكَto you المرجفينَthe rumor-mongers وهمand they are
فجئتُ أشكو إليكَ المرجفينَ وهم

لا درَّ درُّهُمُ أسبابُ خذلاني
So I came to complain to you of the rumor-mongers, who—
So I come to complain to you about those who have shaken me
May no good come from them!—are the causes of my abandonment.
They do not realize the reasons for my abandonment
ياO ليلُnight والروحand the soul عَطشىthirsty وهيَand it is هائِمةٌwandering in longing

هَل في المجرّةِ من ريٍّ لعطشانِ
O night, the soul is thirsty and wandering in longing;
O night, my soul is thirsty as it wanders
Is there in the Milky Way anything to quench a thirsty one?
Is there, in the galaxy, water for the thirsty?

O night, the soul is hungry and bewildered;
O night, my soul is confused as it roams
Does your star hold any provision for the hungry?
Is there, in your stars, provision for the lost?
ياO ليلُnight والعينُand the eye سهرىsleepless وهيَand it is دامعةٌtearful

O night, the eye is sleepless and tearful;
O night, my eyes are sleepless and tearful
Is there beneath your wing anyone to pity the sleepless?
Are there, in your wings, shreds of rest for the wakeful?
ياO ليلُnight حَسبيenough for me وصدريand my breast ملؤهُwhat fills it ضرمٌblazing fire

O night, my breast filled with fire, I need only
O night, enough - my chest is full of wounds
That remnant; so open your tender breast.
Open your affectionate chest for what remains of me

For how often within it my soul has touched solace, having
For through it, my soul found solace
Entrusted it with the secret of my pains and sorrows.
Having deposited in it the secret of my sorrows and laments

O night, where is sleep—rather, where is their apparition?
O night, where are the loved ones? Where are even their ghosts?
For how often, O night, it consoled me in sleep's valley!
For in the land of the loved ones, O night, you have kept me company

And how often my soul fluttered and yearned toward a dream,
How often has my soul soared and poured out to a winged
Winged, dancing in the light, intoxicated with joy.
Dream dancing in the light, joyous

ليلاً ويَصدرُ صُبحاً غيرَ صَديانِ
A dream that flutters over the radiance of her smile
A dream that flutters over her radiant smile
By night, and departs at dawn no longer parched.
At night, and chirps like the morning birds at dawn

O wine-pourer, may your hands never be paralyzed; pass round
O cupbearer, do not slacken, serve up
The daughter of the palms, for sobriety has worn me out.
The daughter of the date palm, for sobriety has made me miserable

And sprinkle it on a liver prey to love's anguish, and rouse,
Let it flow into a liver plundered by love, leaving a mark
By God, my slumbering feeling and faith.
For, by God, it has blinded my feelings and faith

For in its silvery light, so many images
Varied and many-colored, revealed themselves to my eye!
Of different colors appeared before my eyes

And I began to review the past, which thrilled me
Through it; then it saddened me and made me weep.
With sadness, and then with laments and tears

من وَحيِ بُؤسي ومن إلهامِ خِرماني
Until I poured upon its memory a song
Until I poured over its memory a song
From the prompting of my misery and the inspiration of my deprivation.
Inspired by my misery and fueled by my deprivation

O wine-pourer, give me more, for the visions called
O cupbearer, give me more, for the visions have called out to me
To me, intoxicated, though I had not closed my eyelids.
Intoxicated, without me even closing my eyes

The merry bubbles danced in my goblet;
My beloved danced happily in my cup
So where, where is sleep for a drunkard's eyelid?
Where, where are the loved ones from the eyes of the drunk?

O neighbors of the ban trees, may the rain greet your garden
O neighbors of distance, the rain has greeted your dwellings
And generously water your valley, O neighbors of the ban trees.
And your valley has flourished, O neighbors of distance

By God, my nights do not descend upon your homes
Without settling there among my brothers.
Except to spend time among my brethren

Offering comfort, other than my peers and dear friends?
Will console me after losing me?

Will lament my absence atop your fragrant roses?

وهنّا لانسامِ آذارٍ ونيسانِ
By God, were your garden's dreams interpreted
By God, have the dreams of your valley been interpreted
Late at night, to the breezes of March and April?
As they reveled in the breezes of March and April?

And did the doves' lament there sadden her heart,
Has her heart been stirred by the cooing of the doves within?
So that she wept and mourned me after losing me?
Has she interpreted them and wept for me after I was gone?

Caressing as she blossoms like your red roses?

The quarter is not my quarter, nor the neighbors my neighbors.
Neither the living are my living, nor the neighbors my neighbors

No, nor is the soul my soul, since it fluttered and yearned
No, not even my soul is my soul, since it soared and poured out
For the quarter's dwellers—graceful women and beardless youths.
To the inhabitants of the quarter, both settled and nomads

You moved away, and the fog of doubt loomed
My soul's horizons; how often it would have lured me into unbelief,
In the horizons of my soul, with so much disbelief to tempt me

But for a remnant of faith, with the fluttering hopes
Were it not for the remnant of faith fluttering within me
Of my heart in its light, through the night of my sorrows.
Upon its light, my heart, in the night of sorrows

O dwellers of the palace, may good fortune keep smiling
O dwellers of the palace, may your fortune smile upon you
On you; may you endure, and ill fortune endure for the hater.
May you last, as misfortune lasts for your opponent

If the people and homelands deny your merits
The people are not my people, nor the homelands my homelands.
Neither the people are my people, nor the homelands my homelands

Among your gazelles I have a gazelle with whom I am besotted,
Among your gazelles, I had a roe deer I was fond of
A gazelle who grew up in the gardens of Ridwan.
A roe that was raised in the gardens of bliss

By God, He excelled in painting her image - enough -
I seek your protection for him from every devil.
I will return her to you safe from every devil

No sooner had I devoted my soul and my blood to her
When my passions and blood paused before her
Than I confined my songs and meters to her.
My songs and rhythms fell short

O god of love, be gentle with her worshipper,
O God of love, be gentle with her worshipper
For the heart has gained nothing from its second idol.
For the heart found no second object of worship

And thought, O people of my nights, was independent with her
And the soul, O altar of lovers, is my offering.
While my soul, O altar of lovers, is my offering

And can a love that is not spiritual live long?
Can a love be eternal except one of the spirit?
