    فترفقي بالوامق المتواري

    Separation has lasted long, O focus of all eyes;

    so be gentle with the lover hidden away.

    Hawwa, what is this unjust, hateful treatment?

    Have mercy; I am no long-suffering lover.

    هلا سمعت بجنحه استغفاري

    Hawwa, darkness has spread its cloak;

    why did you not hear my plea for forgiveness beneath its wing?

    فسلي نسيم الصبح عن أخباري

    So I asked the evening breezes about you;

    so ask the morning breeze for news of me.

    Hawwa, between my ribs is a fire, and

    my visitors have shunned visiting me because of its heat.

    Or have you not heard its gasps and its sighs

    on the day of farewell? Oh, what a fire!

    Hawwa—I adore her mouth, for so often we exchanged

    love, with her mouth as my wine-seller.

    Hawwa, I was enraptured by her voice until

    my ears came to hate the melody of the strings.

    Hawwa, O beautiful one, and O light

    of this world, and mistress of poetry!

    Alas, our gatherings of fellowship have been deserted,

    and lie empty of drinking companions and late-night talkers.

    No wine glows there in the cups

    to dispel the darkness with light.

    No, nor do the strings sing out to inspire us

    to sing in the stillness of the predawn hours.

    Hawwa, the bulbuls of our garden have fallen silent,

    and withering has crept into the loveliest flowers.

    No roses smile along its sides

    to perfume the passing breeze.

    No, nor are the trees in leaf to let

    birds sing above the crowns of the trees.

    Hawwa, the valley of merriment has become desolate,

    empty of flowers and birds.

    No gazelles, O Hawwa, roam there,

    strutting in the late afternoons and early mornings.

    No, nor are there graceful young women in its embrace,

    carrying goblets of wine in their hands.

    أفما كشفت غوامض الأسرار

    O Love, my soul complains before you;

    have you not, then, uncovered the most obscure secrets?

    مزق بنورك كل كل ستار

    O Love, you are life's light and its secret;

    with your light, tear apart every, every veil.

    رحماك فهي قصيرة الأعمار

    O Love, dreams of passion are beautiful;

    have mercy, for their lives are brief.

    O Love, be gentle, for hearts are innocent,

    and the blame lies with ears and eyes.

    O Love, you are the all-subduing sword; I am not

    one who associates a partner with the One, the All-Subduing.
