While lengthy speeches try to argue
١. يُلامُ لِما لا يَستَطيعُ وَيُعذَرُ
وَيُسهَبُ فيهِ القَولُ أَو فَيُقَصَّرُ
2. Your acts prohibit though he'd cease
If absent thoughts could be laid bare
٢. وَأَفعالُكُم تَنهاهُ لَو كانَ يَنتَهي
وَما غابَتِ الآراءُ لَو كانَ يَحضُرُ
3. My tongue with my affairs contends
From speaking it is banned or muted
٣. لِساني بِأَمري وَهوَ مِنّي وَمِنكُمُ
عَنِ البَثِّ يُنهى أَو فَبالكَتمِ يُؤمَرُ
4. While my eyes lie exposed to you
My heart's displayed, my secret's viewed
٤. فَأَمّا جُفوني فَهيَ بَينَ يَدَيكُمُ
ضَميري بِها يَبدو وَسِرِّيَ يَظهَرُ
5. I've patience - it's my way of old
Unlike the tears that freely roll
٥. صَبَرتُ وَكانَ الصَبرُ مِنِّيَ عادَةً
وَما صَبَرَ الدَمعُ الَّذي يَتَفَجَّرُ
6. "Endure me" did my patience say
Though I exposed my heart, I'll hide away
٦. وَقالَ اِستَدِم صَبري عَلَيكَ فَإِنَّني
وَإِن كُنتُ أَبدَيتُ السَرائِرَ أَستُرُ
7. Shall silence still my love's complaint?
Shall eyes be barred from their restraint?
٧. أَيَسكُتُ عَن شَكوى الهَوى بِكَ مَنطِقٌ
وَتُعدَى جُفوني بِالسُّكوتِ وَتُحصَرُ
8. And who can fill the moment's longing?
In memory's garden, what is thronging?
٨. وَمَن ذا الَّذي يُملا بِهِ خَلوَةُ الهَوى
وَفي رَوضَةِ التَذكارِ ماذا يُفَجَّرُ
9. What barriers loom round the heart's center?
What Mesh is there that none can enter?
٩. وَمَن ذا عَلى قَلبِ الحَبيبِ وَدونَهُ
مِنَ الغَيظِ أَغلاقٌ تُرى يَتَسَوَّرُ
10. Who can be called in days of sorrow?
Who will appear when troubles marrow?
١٠. أَغَيرِيَ مَن يُدعى لِيَومِ كَريهَةٍ
وَساعَةِ شَكوى مِن حَبيبٍ فَيَحضُرُ
11. No softness moves for you, no care
Unless complaint trips in despair
١١. وَما نَهَضَت مِن قَلبِهِ لَكَ رِقَّةٌ
إِذا لَم تَرَ الشَكوى فَذَيلِيَ يَعثَرُ
