Life burdened him,

المجتث

1. Life burdened him,
And troubles overwhelmed him,

١. هانت عليه الحياه
وأرهقته الخطوب

2. And his visions confounded him,
So he was no longer like hearts,

٢. وأذهلته رؤاه
فلم يعُد كالقلوب

3. And he was nothing but
What the nights related of him.

٣. ولم يعد غير ما
تحكيه عنه الليال

4. He witnessed the glory of the eminent,
And so his taste changed.

٤. شُهد شأى علقما
في طعمه فاستحال

5. I protected him with the Quran,
And with the noble Hadith,

٥. عوّذته بالقران
وبالحديث الشريف

6. From sorrow and disgrace,
And from the approach of autumn.

٦. من الأسى والهوان
ومن دنوِّ الخريف

7. I protected him and so
The torment of illusion passed,

٧. عوّذته فانقضى
في الوهم عمر العذاب

8. And he gained from the past
A lifetime of desire in truth.

٨. وزاد عمّا مضى
في الحق عمر الرغاب

9. A heart built its life
On wishing for death,

٩. قلبٌ بنى عمره
على تمنّى الأجل

10. So its affair did not end
With passion or hope.

١٠. فلم يكل أمره
إلى هوى أو أمل

11. And it did not leave its affair
Except to its end,

١١. ولم يكل أمره
إلّا إلى منتهاه

12. So its purity blessed it
With the sadness of God's grasp.

١٢. فباركت طهره
بالحزن كفُّ الإله

13. I asked it about its dwelling,
And it told me it had sold it

١٣. سألتهُ عن مناه
فقال لي بعتُها

14. To a buyer - if only you could see him!
You would say I forgot it.

١٤. لمُشتر لو تراه
تقول أُنسيتُها

15. I wondered at the buyer -
What is his state, I wonder?

١٥. عجبتُ للمشتري
ما حاله يا ترى

16. And the brilliant seller
Says to me, "Or do you see?"

١٦. والبائعُ العبقري
يقول لي أو ترى

17. And an old man circled me like an apparition,
His clarity clouded by troubles,

١٧. وطاف بي كالخيال
شيخ برته الخطوب

18. His food from hearts.
I asked him his name,

١٨. وفي يديه صِلال
طعامها من قلوب

19. And he said, "This is the age."
And his appearance astonished me -

١٩. سألته ما اسمه
فقال هذا الزمن

20. All of it from affliction.
And my heart said to him,

٢٠. وهالني رسمُه
فكلّه من محن

21. "When did you lose purpose?"
His state answered him,

٢١. وقال قلبي له
أيّان فقدُ المُنى

22. "I lost comforting wishes."
"O heart, purpose

٢٢. أجابه حاله
فقد الأماني الضّنى

23. I inherited from my father.
Is lack of comfort

٢٣. يا قلب إن المنى
ورثتُها عن أبي

24. My pursuit after purpose?"
"My Lord, what do I need

٢٤. فهل يكون الضنى
بعد المنى مطلبي

25. With lengthening of my term?
And in the soil is my comfort

٢٥. ربّاه ما حاجتي
إلى امتِداد الأجل

26. After the end of hope."

٢٦. وفي الثرى راحتي
بعد انتهاء الأمل
