لماthen not كنتُI would be إلاexcept طولthroughout عمريmy life مسلماoffering greetings
Peace upon Egypt! Even were I to live for ages,
Greetings to Egypt, even if I lived forever
I would spend my whole life doing nothing but saluting her.
I would always be a Muslim
علىupon موطنٍa homeland لوif خيرَwere given a choice المرءُa person موطناa homeland

Upon a homeland—were a man to choose a homeland
In a homeland, if one had to choose a homeland
On earth, he would choose none kinder or more generous.
None on earth would be more righteous and generous
سرتspread فيamong أهاليهِits people عذوبةُthe sweetness of نيلهits Nile
وسالاand both flowed فماso not أنthat تعرِفَyou recognize الماءَthe water منبماunclear; likely 'from either of them'
The sweetness of its Nile has spread among its people,
The sweetness of its Nile flowed through its people
And both flowed, so you could not tell their waters apart.
Pouring forth, so much so water and bounty become indistinguishable
وأصبحand became فيهin it العدلُjustice والنيلُand the Nile جارياًflowing
فأَوشكso almost أنthat لاnot تُبصرَsees العينُthe eye معدماa destitute person
There justice and the Nile have come to flow,
Justice and the Nile flow in it
So the eye scarcely sees anyone destitute.
And so it is on the verge of no eye beholding poverty
وأضحىand became ملاذَa refuge for الحرِthe free man فيin الشرقِthe East كلِّهall of it
فانso if نابهbefell him ظلمٌinjustice أتىhe came متظلماseeking redress
And it has become the free man's refuge throughout the East.
It has become the refuge of the East in its entirety
If injustice strikes him, he comes seeking redress.
So if it is afflicted with injustice, it comes oppressed
فأصلَحَso it corrected ماwhatever منof أمرهِhis affairs كانwas فاسداًcorrupt
وأرهَفَand it honed ماwhatever مِنof حدِهِhis edge قدalready تثلَّماhad become nicked
It sets right whatever in his affairs has gone awry,
It fixed what was corrupt of its affairs
And hones whatever of his edge has been nicked.
And refined what was flawed and damaged
كذاكthus بلادlands of العدلjustice تعذبare sweet منهلاas a water source
وترقىand are climbed إلىto العمرانcivilization والمجدand glory سُلِّماas a ladder
Thus lands of justice are sweet as a wellspring,
Thus the lands of justice make its springs sweet
And serve as a ladder to civilization and glory.
And rise to civilization and glory as one
وماand not غنمgained الظلامُthe oppressors إلاexcept خسارةloss

Oppressors have gained nothing but loss
But darkness profits nothing but loss
And humiliation—nothing but sorrow and remorse.
And humiliation, nothing but regret and remorse

Sister of Syria, make room for a young man of hers,
My sister Syria, welcome the young man yours
Whom the days have willed to be an orphan.
Whose fate wished he become an orphan

I have taken you as a mother, and came to you bereft
At your feet my heart, my thought, and my blessings.
Casting before your feet my heart, mind and bounty

May rightly shed blood for her sake.
Deserves to bleed for her sake

I shall unsheathe thought that had been sheathed before,
I will unsheathe thoughts that were once restrained
And release speech that had been bridled before.
And unleash speech that was once muzzled

And pierce the heart of hardship until it yields to me,
And stab the heart of the stubborn until it softens for me
And strike the throne of ignorance until it is demolished.
And strike the throne of ignorance until it crumbles

Perhaps my poetry will benefit the people, and hopefully
Will be my interpreter to the people of the East.
It will be a translator for the people of the East

It is nothing but an arrow of thought that I have shot;
It is but an arrow of thought I have loosed
If it hits the mark, that is gain enough for me.
If it strikes true, that is bounty enough for me

I will tread the heights of great men, conversing
Great men of whom time has left only bones.
With their greatest who time has made greatest

I will kiss that earth with manners
And kneel beside it humbly, praying for mercy.

And ask those in it about the East, will it
A return? Perhaps the spirits will speak.
Have a revival, that the souls might speak

I yearn for the sorrowful East and its people
And weep blood over the scattering of its peoples.
And cry for the scattering of its peoples blood

And I mourn the intelligence there laid waste
And mourn that edifice, demolished.
And mourn the ruins there left demolished

And lament a glory that shone in the East
Then vanished, and the East became black and dusky.
That passed away and the East turned blackest black

I turn my whispered thoughts back to Egypt, and there lifts
With whispers I return to Egypt and a fog disperses
The mist that settled over my tormented heart.
That gathered upon my carefree heart

Through her I hope for the East's return and rebirth,
I hope through it the East will return and be reborn
And through her I hope for goodness and blessings for the East.
And I hope through it the East will have goodness and grace

Oh brothers, do not make religion a divider
For religion is only a bond joining earth to heaven.
Religion is but earth's tie to the heavens

To take it upon ourselves to undo what God has bound?
