Rather, fate decreed that I die young,

Beginning to grow, little by little.
Growing little by little and branch by branch,

The spring adorned it with flowers until
Death snapped off a tender shoot from it.
Death snapped off a fresh, green twig,

So peace be upon learning, every day,
To knowledge, I bid farewell every day
From a departed one who was nourished by learning.
From one who found knowledge his nourishment,

To my loved ones, morning and evening.
To my loved ones, morning and evening,

Fate has separated us and scattered us apart
Would that this matter had not been decreed!

For I was so often faithful to covenants—
For in covenants, I was always faithful,

The calamities of fate have stricken them
They left no straight path to consolation.

My bones a mournful tale of you.

For the willow's yellow hue delights my eye,
As is their shade cooling me.
And its shade, too, lies lightly upon me.
