    My lord, this is a poem of praise from a poet

    Who knows neither flattery nor adulation,

    Accustomed to uttering no poem

    Unless humankind chants it in measured cadence,

    Each rhymed verse playing upon the mind,

    Word of it has crossed the Euphrates and the Nile.

    وهجرتهُ هجرَ الخليلِ خليلا

    And indeed, I abandoned poetry for a time, compelled,

    And forsook it as a friend forsakes a friend;

    Not out of aversion or weariness, but I

    Became diverted from it, occupied with other things:

    With livelihood, seeking it and striving after it

    As racehorses strive, morning and evening.

    What can poetry bestow in a time when

    A pound of barley is the hardest thing to obtain?

    This is a crisis that will not pass or end

    Until you extend a hand to it, and so it passes.

    فابسُط يدَيكَ وحقِّقِ المأمولا

    On you, and no one else, our hopes are pinned;

    So stretch out both your hands and fulfill what is hoped for.

    And the task, I know, is among the hardest

    Of things, whatever is spread and said about it.

    Yet one like you, seasoned among governors,

    Does not regard a formidable crisis as formidable.

    And are you not Azmi, possessed of the resolve that

    Turns the rugged ground of hardship into plains?

    You who dispel immense afflictions with a resolve

    Fresh and untouched, which turned Time's gaze back weary.

    How many a night you kept an eye awake,

    Whose eyelid the stars long to kiss!

    You enliven its darkness, working and wakeful,

    While another spends the night wrapped in slumber.

    In service to the sacred homeland, you never flag,

    Whether striving toward the heights or attaining them.

    فيها الدليلُ لمن أراد دليلا

    These are your great deeds among us;

    In them is proof for whoever desires proof.

    سلَّمتَ أعراضاً بها وعقولا

    For you established refuges and schools;

    Through them you safeguarded honor and minds.

    How many an orphan, passing the night lamenting his lot,

    Found in them a substitute for his parents!

    And many a family's daughter, whose purity was nearly touched

    By hunger, which appeared as a ghoul when she saw it,

    Preserved through them the blossom of chastity; indeed, it

    Is the noblest wreath that women seek.

    And when I recount your noble deeds, I am drawn

    To a club through which you earned abundant praise:

    السامياتِ ابوَّةً وخؤُولا

    The club of fair women, pure in their principles,

    Noble in their paternal and maternal descent;

    الباهراتِ محاسناً وعقولا

    Their virtue freeing them from any need for ornaments,

    Dazzling in beauty and intellect;

    الساحباتِ من الإِباء ذيولا

    Inclining toward learning and piety,

    Trailing trains of proud self-respect;

    The gentle, enchanting, virtuous women,

    Who lift obscurity from the land.

    Come, maiden of the East: this is a chance

    That Time had begrudged you.

    Rise to seek eminence, and renew

    An age of Islam that was beautiful.

    And rouse men's resolve, and refute

    What tale-tellers have long spread as rumors about you.

    فَهوَ الممهدُ للرقيِّ سبيلا

    Knowledge is the finest adornment, so learn;

    For it paves a path to advancement.

    A beautiful face does not benefit our land

    Unless noble conduct stands as guarantor.
