    May God bless our fish.

Among the fish of the sea, it was a queen.

I would give my life for the hand by which it was caught,

And the one that wove the threads of the net.

They carried it toward us on a platter,

    Above which our gazes intertwined.

So al-Fayyad began gazing toward it,

And readied his palate for swallowing.

And wished—this is a secret between us—

That he alone might face the battle.

He believes in sharing, but here

    He preferred selfishness to sharing.

So too the soul, when you entice it,

Is satisfied with nothing but the queen's crown.

I shall not forget the kitchen that bestowed it,

Lavish in goodness, rich in blessing,

Belonging to the young man of the house of Hubaysh, to whom

Our tongues unite in offering thanks.

Shadid, who honors guests, left no

    Path to praise untrodden.

I agree, if he accepts this arrangement:

Every poem like this in return for a fish.
