I said to the shining stars one evening:

Are you, I wonder, like us in misery?

With sleepless eyelids—is it from separation?

Constricting the ribs—is it for reunion?

Wandering with the Milky Way, you run

    toward no goal or hope,

like a flock of thirsty sandgrouse

around water, denied a drink of water,

or bewildered maidens around a bier,

in prayer that never ends, and supplication.

Indeed, in your plaintive gaze is longing,

    whose arrow pierces my entrails.

And I see your faint light like tears

    flowing from white eye sockets.

Are you sorrowful mouths, or wounds,

    in the black infinity?

You, O grandmother of creatures, mother of

Time, O mistress of guidance and light—

are you weeping, O stars? They answered:

We are in solitude in this expanse.

Estrangement has long been between us; let not

the nearness of our lights deceive you.

Each star among us lives far away

from his brother, in loneliness and alienation,

    burning himself to no avail,

his light going to waste in the sky.

I have understood what you say, O shooting

stars; for you are the souls of poets.

Thus their light is lost upon a horizon

where they have settled as strangers.

The souls near them do not see

the ardor and brilliance within them.

So they light the darkness for a while, and pass on

in the robes of immortality, toward the expanse.
