تلقىyou receive التهانئcongratulations يومon the day of عيدكyour feast مثلماjust as
تلقى التهانئ يوم عيدك مثلما
تلقىreceive الملوكُkings الشعرَpoetry فيon الأعيادِfestive days
تلقى الملوكُ الشعرَ في الأعيادِ
You receive congratulations on your feast day, just as
On your birthday, you receive congratulations
kings receive poetry on festive days.
As kings receive poetry on holidays.
ياO زينةَthe adornment of الأولادِchildren إنكindeed you فيin غدٍtomorrow
يا زينةَ الأولادِ إنك في غدٍ
لاno شكَّdoubt تصبحُyou will become زينةَthe adornment of الأفرادِindividuals
لا شكَّ تصبحُ زينةَ الأفرادِ
O adornment of children, in days to come you
O jewel of children, tomorrow undoubtedly
will surely become the adornment of all people.
You will be the jewel of individuals.
فرعٌa branch لذاكَof that الأَصلroot تقفوyou follow إِثرهُhis footsteps
فرعٌ لذاكَ الأَصل تقفو إِثرهُ
وتنالُand you attain ماwhat قدalready نالَhe attained منof أمجادِglories
وتنالُ ما قد نالَ من أمجادِ
A branch of that root, you follow in his footsteps,
A branch to that origin, following in his footsteps
and attain the glories he has attained.
And attaining what he achieved of glories.
اليومَtoday فيin ساحاتthe courtyards of قصرِكَyour palace لاعبٌat play
اليومَ في ساحات قصرِكَ لاعبٌ
وغداًand tomorrow نراكwe see you تزينُyou adorn صدرَthe forefront of الناديthe assembly
وغداً نراك تزينُ صدرَ النادي
Today you play in your palace courtyards;
Today in your palace's grounds a player
tomorrow we shall see you grace the forefront of the assembly.
And tomorrow we see you adorning the club’s chest.
ياO أيهاyou الفرخُthe fledgling الصغيرُlittle لكfor you الفضاthe sky
يا أيها الفرخُ الصغيرُ لك الفضا
رحبُspacious المجالthe expanse وأنتand you ذوpossessing استعدادِpotential
رحبُ المجال وأنت ذو استعدادِ
O little fledgling, the sky is yours,
O little chick, the space is wide for you
vast in expanse, and you are full of promise.
With readiness and ability.
ولسوفَand surely will يشتدُّgrow strong الجناحِthe wing فتغتديso you will become
ولسوفَ يشتدُّ الجناحِ فتغتدي
كالنسرlike the eagle بلnay لكfor you كلُّevery نسرٍeagle فادِa ransomer
كالنسر بل لك كلُّ نسرٍ فادِ
And your wing will surely grow strong, and you will become
Your wings will gain strength, so you can hunt
like an eagle—nay, every eagle will give itself for you.
Like an eagle, rather, every eagle will serve you.
ولسوفand surely will تبلغreach مسمعيكyour two ears مقالتيmy utterance
ولسوف تبلغ مسمعيك مقالتي
هذيthis متىwhen أصبحتَyou have become ربَّa possessor of رشادِsound judgment
هذي متى أصبحتَ ربَّ رشادِ
And my words will surely reach your ears—
My words will reach your ears
these words, once you have attained sound judgment.
When you become the lord of guidance.
فتريكthen it shows you أنيthat I am صادقٌright بفراستيin my discernment
فتريك أني صادقٌ بفراستي
حكماًcertainly كماjust as أناI صادقٌsincere بوداديin my affection
حكماً كما أنا صادقٌ بودادي
Then they will show you that my discernment is sound,
You will see I was right in my judgement
certainly, just as I am sincere in my affection.
As I am true in my affection.
وتصيرand you will come to انif أنشدتُI recite فيكabout you قصائديmy poems
وتصير ان أنشدتُ فيك قصائدي
تهتزُّyou thrill مثلlike أبيكَyour father للانشادat the recitation
تهتزُّ مثل أبيكَ للانشاد
And if I recite my poems about you, you will
And if I recite poems about you
thrill to the recitation, just like your father.
You will tremble like your father for poetry.
انindeed الكرامthe noble تهزُّهمstirs them مداحهمpraise of them
ان الكرام تهزُّهم مداحهم
هزَّthe brandishing of الكماةِwarriors السيفَthe sword يومَon a day of جلادِcombat
هزَّ الكماةِ السيفَ يومَ جلادِ
For the noble are stirred by the praise they receive,
The generous tremble for their praiser
as warriors brandish the sword on a day of combat.
The sword trembled the brave on the day of battle.
فَهُمُfor they إذاwhen امتدحواthey are praised رأواthey see ماwhat فيهمwithin them
فَهُمُ إذا امتدحوا رأوا ما فيهم
منof غرّradiant أوصافٍqualities وغُرِّand radiant اياديbenefactions
من غرّ أوصافٍ وغُرِّ ايادي
For when they are praised, they see what lies within them
So when they are praised, they see in themselves
of radiant qualities and radiant acts of kindness.
Special traits and outstanding deeds.
شوقيmy longing إلىfor ذاكthat المحيَّاface يستبيtakes captive
شوقي إلى ذاك المحيَّا يستبي
بجمالهwith its beauty الوَّضاحradiant كلَّevery فؤادِheart
بجماله الوَّضاح كلَّ فؤادِ
I yearn for that face, which takes captive
Shawqi longs for that shining one who captivates
every heart through its radiant beauty,
Every heart with his radiant beauty.
وإلىand for أبيكyour father وقدwhile already جلستَyou have sat بحجرِهِin his lap
وإلى أبيك وقد جلستَ بحجرِهِ
تلقيyou put عليهِto him مسائِلquestions الأولادِchildren's
تلقي عليهِ مسائِل الأولادِ
and for your father, with you seated in his lap,
And for your father, as you sat in his lap
putting children's questions to him.

يرنوhe gazes إليكَat you وقلبهُand his heart مستبشرٌrejoicing
يرنو إليكَ وقلبهُ مستبشرٌ
يتلوhe reads بوجهكin your face طالعthe augury of الاسعادِhappiness
يتلو بوجهك طالع الاسعادِ
He gazes at you, his heart rejoicing,
He looks to you, his heart elated
reading in your face the augury of happiness.
Reading fortunes in your face.
وعليكand upon you منfrom عينيهِhis two eyes فيضُa flood of أشعَّةٍrays
وعليك من عينيهِ فيضُ أشعَّةٍ
تحكيresemble شعاعَthe radiance of الشمسthe sun بالإيقادِin blazing brightness
تحكي شعاعَ الشمس بالإيقادِ
And from his eyes a flood of rays falls upon you,
From his eyes, rays pour over you
resembling the sun's rays in their fiery glow.
Like the radiance of the blazing sun.
ويميلُand he bends جدُّكَyour grandfather فوقabove رأسكyour head رأسَهُhis head
ويميلُ جدُّكَ فوق رأسك رأسَهُ
فتزينso you adorn أبيضَthe white of شعرهِhis hair بسوادِwith blackness
فتزين أبيضَ شعرهِ بسوادِ
And your grandfather bends his head above yours,
Your grandfather leans over your head
so you adorn the white of his hair with black.
So you adorn his white hair with your black.
هوَhe أصلthe root of بيتٍa house أنتyou بعضُone of فروعهِits branches
هوَ أصل بيتٍ أنت بعضُ فروعهِ
فاحفظهُso preserve it فيناamong us ثابتَfirm الأَوتادِthe stakes
فاحفظهُ فينا ثابتَ الأَوتادِ
He is the root of a house; you are one of its branches,
He is the origin of a house, and you are one of its branches
so preserve it among us, its stakes firmly fixed.
So keep him as a firmly rooted pillar.
واهنأand rejoice بهذاin this العيدfeast واسلمand remain safe للعلىfor glory
واهنأ بهذا العيد واسلم للعلى
ولوand even if لديكَwith you وسدand hold sway علىover الأندادِequals
ولو لديكَ وسد على الأندادِ
And rejoice in this feast, and live unharmed for glory;
Congratulations on this holiday, submit to the Most High
