Today they have carried upon a plank

The man who used to bear humanity's burdens.

وأَنزلوا في منزلٍ ضيِّقٍ

وأَنزلوا في منزلٍ ضيِّقٍ

مَن لم يَسَعهُ قبلَ ذا منزلُ

مَن لم يَسَعهُ قبلَ ذا منزلُ

And lowered into a narrow dwelling

Him whom no dwelling could contain before now.

أضحى نقولا في الثرى وحدهُ

أضحى نقولا في الثرى وحدهُ

وكان من أعوانهِ جحفلُ

وكان من أعوانهِ جحفلُ

Nicola now lies alone in the earth,

Though once he had a host of helpers.

وأَخرسَ الموتُ الخطيبَ الذي

قد كان يهتزُّ لهُ المحفلُ

قد كان يهتزُّ لهُ المحفلُ

And death has silenced the orator who

Once set the gathering astir.

فبعدَ هذا اليوم لا منبرٌ

يهابُهُ الناسُ ولا مِقوَلُ

So after this day, there is no pulpit

That people hold in awe, nor an eloquent tongue,

ولا بيانٌ ساحرٌ للنهى

ولا بيانٌ ساحرٌ للنهى

يفعلُ في الأَلبابِ ما يفعلُ

يفعلُ في الأَلبابِ ما يفعلُ

Nor eloquence that enchants the intellect

And works so powerfully upon minds.

أَقولُ للقبرِ الذي ضمَّهُ

أَقولُ للقبرِ الذي ضمَّهُ

لو أنهُ يسمعُ أَو يعقلُ

لو أنهُ يسمعُ أَو يعقلُ

I would say to the grave that has embraced him,

If it could hear or understand:

يا قبرُ لا تُثقِل عليهِ فما

يا قبرُ لا تُثقِل عليهِ فما

كان على إِخوانهِ يثقلُ

كان على إِخوانهِ يثقلُ

O grave, do not weigh heavily upon him, for never

Did he weigh heavily upon his brothers.

إِن لم يكن غيثٌ فتُسقى بهِ

إِن لم يكن غيثٌ فتُسقى بهِ

فحسبكَ الدمعُ الذي يهطلُ

فحسبكَ الدمعُ الذي يهطلُ

If there is no rain to water you,

Then the tears that pour down will suffice you.
