One day I looked into your eyes, pondering,

And what I beheld through the night in the unseen filled me with dread.

I saw that, should time part us,

And the little mouth I loved, and the eye, vanish,

And my neck be bereft of your arm, and enfolded

By an allotted arm of dust,

My image would never cease to stand

Before your eyes, kept alive by faithfulness and remembrance.

Which of my moods, then, will you remember,

Through which my soul will look out upon you and appear?

Perhaps I did not smile at you enough

Through nights gone by, keeping vigil beside your cradle.

Perhaps I never did you justice, and was not

As patient as motherhood requires of me.

So I cried out and let tears flow in exasperation—

But can a mother grow weary and impatient?

Perhaps I could not express all

The tenderness my heart harbors and conceals.

Did not life and its splendor captivate me,

And books and journeys, a garden and a lute?

For I loved art in every form,

Delighting and bringing tears, or singing and dazzling.

Were those not hours whose love I denied you,

By spending them on what was less deserving?

My daughter, no! By God, no one has loved

As I have loved, nor have lines conveyed a love like mine.

I loved you with a love that, should you wish to imagine

Even a part of it, imagination would fail you.

I gave you my whole heart, with its joy

And its sorrows; I neither held back nor fell short.

So if you remember me after my death, my image

    Will answer as faithfulness wishes, and pass by;

Upon it is a sign of sacred love,

At whose mention people pray and proclaim God's greatness.
