أيعلمُdoes he know فرنندُFernand انthat الهوىlove
كوىseared منof جنستاGenesta صميمthe innermost core الحشاthe heart
Does Fernand know that love
Does Ferdinand know that passion
has seared the very core of Genesta's heart,
Is of the essence of the heart's core?
وأنيand that I اصبحتُI have become فيin حبهِlove for him
اسيرةَa captive سُهدٍsleeplessness واختand a sister ضنىwasting illness
and that, in loving him, I have become
That I have become, in loving him,
a captive of sleeplessness and a sister to wasting illness?
A captive of affection and a sister of yearning.
أُعانيI suffer الهمومَcares وأرعىand I watch over النجومَthe stars
وأُجريand I let flow الدموعَthe tears كسيلlike a torrent هماpoured down
I suffer cares and keep watch over the stars,
I suffer sorrows and tend to the stars,
and let tears flow like a pouring torrent.
And unleash tears like a torrent of grief,
وأيand what a حبيبٍbeloved إذاwhen ماever (emphatic) بداhe appears
تقولyou would say مليكٌa king رفيعlofty اللواthe banner
And what a beloved! Whenever he appears,
What lover, when he appears,
you would say: a king whose banner flies high.
Can one say is a noble of high rank,
لهhe has طلعةٌa countenance انif رأتهاthey see it النساءthe women
خلعنَthey cast off العذارَthe bridle وبعنَand they sell الحياmodesty
His countenance is such that, if women behold it,
Who has a rising, if women saw it,
they cast off the bridle and sell their modesty.
They would take off modesty and sell propriety,
وعزةand dignity نفسof soul تودُّwish الملوكthe kings
لوif only أنthat لهاfor them مثلهاits like فيamong الورىhumankind
And a dignity of soul that kings wish
And a pride of self that kings would love
they had the like of among humankind;
To have the like of it in the world,
ولطفُand gentleness حديثٍof speech كأَنَّas though النسيمَthe breeze
بليلاًcool and moist بمنطقهِthrough his speech قدalready سرىdrifted
and a gentleness of speech, as though the breeze,
And a gentle discourse, as if the breeze
cool and moist, had drifted through his words.
In the night, with its speech, had blown
فياso, O ربّLord هلwhether مثلthe like of هذهthese الصفاتqualities
يحوزpossesses أثيمٌa sinner أليفa companion of الشقاmisery
So, O Lord, can such qualities as these
So oh Lord, do attributes like these
be possessed by a sinner, a companion of misery?
Adorn a sinner, intimate with misery?
إِذاif كانis فرنندُFernand لِصاًa thief فلِمthen why
وهبتَYou bestowed لهُon him خلقthe character اهلthe people of العُلىhigh rank
If Fernand is a thief, then why
If Ferdinand is a thief, then why
have You bestowed on him the character of the noble?
Did you grant him the nature of the exalted?
أَتجمعُdo You unite بينbetween الهدىright guidance والضلالand error
وبينand between الثريَّاthe Pleiades وبينand between الثرىthe dust
Do You unite right guidance with error,
Do you combine guidance and misguidance
and the Pleiades with the dust?
And the Pleiades and the ground?
أَلاindeed جلَّis exalted شأنكYour majesty عنabove ذيthese الأمورthings
ونُزِهَتَand You are free عنfrom مثلthe like of هذاthis الهوىcaprice
Indeed, Your majesty is exalted above such things,
Exalted is your affair above the affairs
and You are free of such caprice.
And You are far above the like of this passion
ففرنندُso Fernand ليسis not بلصa thief ولكنbut
هنالكthere سرٌّa secret شديدdeep الخفاconcealment
So Fernand is no thief; but
For Ferdinand is no thief, but
there is a deeply hidden secret.
There is a profound secret here
ولاand there is no بدalternative منto كشفهِrevealing it عنin قريبa short while
ليكشفَso it may lift عنيfrom me هذاthis العناanguish
And it must be revealed before long,
That must soon be revealed
to lift this anguish from me,
To uncover this distress from me
وأعلمand I may know أنيthat I لمdid not أتبعI follow
بحبَّيهِin my love for him الاexcept طريقthe path of الهدىright guidance
and so I may know that I have not followed,
And I know that I have not followed
in my love for him, any path but that of right guidance.
In loving him except the path of guidance
وبعدand after all علامَwhy الذهولُthe bewilderment تُرىone wonders
أَليسis there not لفرنندfor Fernand شبهٌa counterpart هناhere
And after all, why this bewilderment, I wonder?
And after the swooning of confusion
Does Fernand not have a counterpart here?
Does Ferdinand not have a likeness here?
أماas for اناI منذُsince صبايَmy childhood اعيشI live
بهذيin this الفلاةwilderness كبعضlike one of المهاthe oryx
As for me, since my childhood I have lived
As for me, since my youth I have lived
in this wilderness, like one of the oryx.
In this wilderness like some animals
يقولونthey say راعيةٌa shepherdess كلماwhenever
رأونيthey saw me وماand not علمواthey knew منwho أناI am
They say, "A shepherdess," whenever
They say, whenever they see me, a shepherdess,
they see me, yet do not know who I am.
And they do not know who I am
فنحنُso we اذنthen فيin الحياةlife سواءٌequal
كلاناboth of us شريدٌan outcast بهذيin these الدناthe earthly worlds
So we are equals, then, in life:
So we in life are equal
both of us are outcasts in these earthly realms.
Both of us stray in this world
وقدand indeed جمعbrought together الحظُّfortune ماwhat بينناbetween us
فلِمso why لاnot نكونwe are كذاlikewise فيin الهوىlove
And fortune has brought us together;
And fortune has brought together between us
so why should we not be likewise joined in love?
So why can we not be so in love?
