أتذكرdo you remember إِذwhen لناfor us فيin مصرَEgypt ذكرُrenown
وأَيامٌand days علىupon التاريخِhistory غرُّresplendent
Do you remember when we had renown in Egypt,
I remember when in Egypt we were recalled
and days resplendent in history;
And days in history that were great
وإذand when روضُthe garden الصباyouth غضٌّtender أَنيقٌlovely
وأَوقاتُand hours الصفاserenity صرعىstricken تمرُّpass
and when youth’s garden was tender and lovely,
When the meadow of youth was fresh and elegant
and hours of serenity passed, stricken;
And times of purity flowed gently by
وإِذand when نُرصيwe indulge (apparent misspelling) الشبابَyouth ولاand not نباليwe care
عواقبهits consequences أَتحلوwill they be sweet? أَمor تمرُّturn bitter
and when we indulged youth, heedless
When we squandered our youth recklessly
of its consequences—whether sweet or bitter?
Heedless of the bitter or sweet consequences
وأَذand when تقعُbefall الخطوبُcalamities فنتَّقيهاso we ward them off
وكلُّand all سلاحناour weaponry أَدبٌliterature وفقرُand poverty
And when calamities befell us, we warded them off,
When misfortunes befell, we evaded them
and all our weaponry was literature and poverty.
Our only weapons courtesy and poverty

If you charged at me, verse replied;
If I composed poetry, poetry answered back
and if I charged at you, prose replied.
If I wrote prose, prose answered in kind
